The Xbox will only do DD through optical on a HD pack.

The official Xbox Advanced AV Pack pack and the official Xbox Advanced SCART Cable also support optical audio (and with that, also DD and DTS). If you can't get the Advanced AV Pack or the Xbox Advanced SCART Cable, search for the Joytech Digital AV Cable. It also has got an S-Video connection and RGB SCART Connection. Off course, it supports optical audio.

or you could add an optical out to the xbox itself
