Quick Vga Clarifiaction
« on: December 29, 2005, 04:31:00 PM »

Just to clarify before I order the parts.

I have a 1.5 XBox with a Focus encoder, which I am told the IND-5003 bios supports for VGA output.
I have an XBox Component cable.  If I purchase a simple VGA-to-RCA adaptor like in this pic http://www.cs1.net/i...C_HD-15_192.jpg , and enable VGA support in the bios, this will give me VGA output on my XBox, simple as, right?

I have read the guides and tutorials, just wanted a very quick clarification that this will work.

if your chip supports more than one bank then you're good to go. also, provided the IND bios isn't as big as your chip's entire memory you'll be fine

dunno how you're gonna be able to change the refresh rates unless you know something groovy smile.gif

you'd be wanting 31khz horz then?

If you use that cable with a VGA BIOS, your monitor must support Sync On Green.

Cool, pretty sure mine does.

Am I right in assuming this should look better than using a ttranscoder such as the X2VGA or VD-Z3 because it's outputting VGA natively, as opposed to transcoding Component to VGA?

Cool, thanks for the clarification.

I am right in saying the patched IND-5001 does support 1.5? (Focus encoder)

Indeed. I am currently using a homemade sog vga cable with the ind 5001 junkmonkey vga and a 22" SOG monitor - all on my 1.5 with a focus chip.

Cool.

Another question, would I only have access to 480p using this method, or could I use 720p too?  I am hooking this up to the VGA port on my LCD TV which is 720p-capable.

Shakey_Jake33, its actually IND-BIOS 5001 VGA Junkmonkey (unless the 5003 has now been patched?)

I can confirm that it does indeed look better than when using a transcoder. I have a Sony GD420 19" CRT and when using the bios with an HD pack and the BNC's on the monitor, it really does leave my VD-Z3 in the dust. Of course you need to be aware of problem titles like the Splinter Cell series and Top spin, but otherwise its well worth using.

I get the same quality of picture with my x2vga as i do with the vga bios.  The main reason i do not use the vga bios, is because the color ratio is fubard in 720p.  Not to mention that some games revert back to green.

Curious, I flashed the IND-5001 VGA bios to bank 2 (keeping my X2 bios on bank 1), and the machine flashes red.  Is this to be expected when not using a the VGA cable (using Component cable), or is this a bad flash?  As I assumed it should work fine but with a green tint.

Correct.  You should get a puke green picture with regular cables, when vga bios are enabled.

Except when using RGB SCART, which will display normal colours.

You should be presented with a 'Loading IND-BIOS' screen, then a custom flubber animation and title.

Foe-hammer, I wonder if the similarity you see between the X2VGA and using the BIOS with a custom vga cable is because of the straight connection between the transcoder and the AVIP? (whereas with the VD-Z3 you need to use a component cable aswell). I can only compare with the VD-Z3, but it certainly does not match my component (wired to the AVIP) to BNC connection combined with the VGA BIOS.
Agreed though, the green games are a hassle.

I use the pretty much the same setup as you for a home made vga cable (MS hd pack, 5-BNC to vga cable, and 3 rca to bnc adapters).

I would use my vga cable with the vga bios if only it displayed 720p properly (i use xbmc the most, and dvd playback is a must in 720p  tongue.gif ).  Because it does not, i use my x2vga soley.

That being said, and as i stated earlier, i get the exact same picture quality (brightness, detail, color vibrance) with the x2vga that i do with the vga bios, eventhough technically the vga bios should produce a better picture, because it is native, and no converion is going on.

Cool guys smile.gif  Didn't know about the problems with 720p using the homemade VGA cable, tempted do go with the X2VGA instead.

What's this X2VGA2?  When trying to order an X2VGA+ from the official site, I get a messege telling me the X2VGA2 is coming soon.  Can't find any info about it.  Gonna wait for it though smile.gif
