Hard Drive Blew Up.. What Next!..
« on: July 16, 2003, 05:46:00 AM »

Ok.. heres the deal.
My mate has an xbox that he got modded..
and he didnt touch n e thing ever, apart from playing burnt games and originals, he didnt remove the normal MS dashboard..

now all of a sudden.. his xbox hard drive wont power on..
i had a look at it.. its gone.... it wont even spin when power is connected to it.. it just makes a pop sound.. and "GRRRRRRRRRRRs".. very unhealthy sounding..

as u would assume.. he cant play his xbox..
and he doesnt have the lock / unlock codes which u get by doing a backup in Evox..

basically.. is his Xbox Doomed?

i havent changed or done n e thing with hard drives b4.. but dont u need the hard drive code thingy to do somehting...

OR is it easy as me buying him a say 40 gig hard drive and installing it in, with say the Slayers disk?...

would it detect the slayers disk, if there is nothing on the hard drive??
becasue he cant play any games at the moment as it says some error bout the hard drive.. i cant remember the Error number.. but it was hard drive time out one..

does he need a different bios to be able to read the DVD-ROM drive before the Hard drive?..

cheers

i dont know anything about what you said...

but what it made me think, is has anyone ever wondered about selling there original 8gb(well 10gb wd) cause i have mine, i just keep it in this metal vase, i don't even know why i have it.. i've got the whole c: backed up on this (laptop) and on my pc...

someone could make a profit off it, though its most likely illegal

what you mean to n00bs who can't burn their own cd's, although it would be totally illegal then

NO!
So y post??... and infact. he doesnt have 1 illegal game.. its only like when i come over to his house with my backups..
he aint got a DVD-Burner!, thats y he never set up Evox on his xbox.. coz there was no need!

Can some 1 tell me if this is correct.. to resolve the problem..

i open up my xbox... get my working hard drive... put it in his xbox..
power on the xbox..
Load up into the dash..
Then remove my hard drive from his xbox..
Then place the new 40 gig drive in the xbox (While power is still on)..
then launch slayers to set up the drive!

Is it easy as that?
or do u swap hard drives when the xbox is OFF?

removing components while the power is on will only damage your xboxs power supply....

Isn't it just a case of inserting the new HDD and booting from the EvolutionX CDRW, choose "Install New Drive" ...........?

PS. I've heard a lot of ppl talk about swapping BIOS', HDDs, etc, while power is on. I'm an Electronics Engineer, so listen........

While some might say it works and/or it's safe, for those of us unlucky enough, you end up blowing your XBOX or your HDD. Is it worth it? No. Show me any HDD manufacture that claims their HDDs are hot-swappable.......there are none. Well, there are a few, but these are NOT normal HDDs, they have special electronics to facilitate the hot-swap feature and usually cost, like, AUS$2000 per 50G drive.

ok thankz for your input biggrin.gif
i defiantly wont take the risk tongue.gif

anwyays.. would a CR-RW boot up b4 the hard drive?..
this is what im confused about..

would his xbox boot up slayers before the hard drive?
coz currently he cant play anything, modchip on / off.. nothing works.. it just gives an error.. no matter what game he puts in the tray..... so wouldnt this mean slayers wont work?

yes just put in the replacment drive, but up with an evox cd, or slayers install if you
must, and partition and format the new drive.

The CD I have with EvoX loaded only has the options:

  • Install New Drive
  • Settings
  • Reboot

How does one restore an EvoX backup, then?

I know u can FTP to the XBox, but can you restore the system files of an XBox from FTP?

heh, I'll bet it's one of the IBM deskstar drives he used,
they're commonly known as the 'deathstar' range as they keep dying!

swap out the hard drive for the original, see if that works,
