ok sup guys. idk where to put this but this i guess would be the best placee. im looking to make a homemade projecter using a frensle lens and a tv. i just ordered the lens off ebay for like 8 bux. im waiting for it to get here. but i just need some input from whoever has done this. is the quality good? is it hard to do? is it worth the 8 bux i just speant haha. anyway. thanx before hand. and since this doesnt have anything to do with xbox. mods feel free to close this if necessery. thanx!

You got burned. The quality is poor and it will be very dark. Least it was only 8 bucks.

If you want to make a good and cheap projector, get creative with an overhead projector and an old 15" TFT-screen.

dam u serious? i saw some1 who made it and his quility was fine. it was just like the tvs quility. MAYBE a LITTLE bit less but idc about that. any1 else have opinions? im gunna try this out as soon as it gets here and ill let u guys know.

i made a diy projector that was decent (before a cable was ripped) you need a 15" TFT LCD monitor and an overhead projector. 4000lumens is good for the projector. you take the lcd out of the monitor and basically put it on top of the projector.

my monitor was $45 used, and the OHP was borrowed, but I bet you could get one for around $50-$100 used. be sure to cool the LCD though with a fan or something. i've heard the fresnel things blow.

Because I'm such a nice guy, here is an article on Tom's Hardware. They also wrote a second article.

The only problem is finding a suitable 15" screen. Leeloo, can you tell me what brand/model of TFT-screen you used? And did or didn't you need to solder the 'corner-cable'? I tried it once with a monitor, but that cable was too short. You would help me VERY much by giving this information.

i used a viewsonic one. i can't remember what model # but i think it was something like V150. It worked ok, but the cables were a bit of a hassle. I bought mine from a website for buying / selling for my campus. I'm no expert though, i've only tried it once, then it broke (ripped cable). i then got a real digital projector someone was throwing away for free, i use that.

haha well im totally confused now. on this website everyone is saying the blow, and on other websites people are saying the quility is a little less then the tvs. witch to me, isnt that bad. idk. like i said ill try it out when it gets here and let u guys know.

the OHP projectors are pretty crappy actually,
if you want to have a REAL DIY projector goto

basically the overhead projector is just a starting point for diy projectors. you want a 7-17inch lcd, a 400w HPS(High Pressure Sodium) ballast(transformer, Ignitor, and Capacitor)

this bulb burns at 5200k so you actually get whites that are white and your colors arnt off. plus the bulbs last better than 10x that of an OHP
then you need some freynal lens and a Triplett lens, build a box for it all and enjoy

the first three sites i listed all have free plans on how to do it right. i started with an ohp and the results arnt Terrible, but they arnt great especially if you have any sort of ambiant light coming into your room. the bulbs and ballast run about $100, which isnt much more than you will pay for an OHP, $50 is pretty standard. if you are talking about the fresnel lens projector as in make your 22 inch tv a 60 inch with 20 bucks some duct tape and these ebay instructions i totally agree, thats a scam. but QUALITY projectors can be made at a fraction of the cost of their comercial equivilant. they both use fresnel lenss, it just depends on the application

To address the issue of the "corner cable" being to short, its called an FCC cable, you can find them all over the internet, you just need a 6 inch extender, so buy the ribbon cable and to connectors and waalaa easy as pie. its near imposible to solder those things each trace is 1mm apart, and there is usually 20 to 40 of them

The cost of good projectors are dropping. I just install a small home theater system using a Dell 2300MP. It's not the best projector I have ever seen, but it's ultra small and cheap at around $700. For the price, it's great. And by the time the bulb dies, something better will be on the market.

With the prices dropping, a lot of places are getting new projectors and tossing the old ones.
I got an old '98 Hitachi for free. It took a few hours to clean and align, and the 640x480 native is not that high, but the quality is quite good for playing games and watching movies. I am watching Final Fantasy VII Advent Children right now and the color is impressive. Look around, check some small computer shops. They might have something they want to get rid of.

well. i tried the projector and after about 2-3 weeks of tweeking i came to realize that it blows. the image is prjected onto the wall and the center of the image is very clear. but the edges fade out and the corners are very fuzzy.... i guess ill just stick with my infocus.... looking to buy another projector though. any1 have an hdtv projector they wanna get rid of for a cheap price?

the daewoo i striped for my new projector is 1024 x 768 w/ 350:1 contrast, it makes a world of difference when you blow the pixels up that large.
