Quite the opposite, the picture is amazing.

Of course that depends on how good the plasma or LCD screen are...

i got a 64 inch HD rear projection and i wouldnt ever go back to standard def.

i put picture picture on with my standard xbox, and one with high def... you wouldnt believe how shitty standard def looked.

It has to be the settings. I don't mean necessarily the brightness and contrast, I meam often they have special processing modes, called things like "dynamic" etc. These are like presets for image processing. Play around with them.

What you have described is classic over-contrast - lights too light and darks too dark.

Well, I just played with the settings for a half an hour and still couldnt get it to look right.  On top of the weird color its got sorta a fuzzy look to it and alot of the corners and sides of textures look really jagged.  I tried turning the High Def on my box off and it looked even worse.  I dont know what to do now (at this point im praying its just my box or somethin)  Any idea?  Thanks for your time I really appreciate it.

I'm useing monster component cables just like my friend with the CRT.  I dont have the MS HD Pack.  If it is because I dont have the MS HD pack why does my friends HD crt look so much better?  Thanks again for your reply I really appreciate it.
