yes ofcourse it is,
you'll find dozens of posts on this subject.
the best ways to do this currently is to either get some kind of adapter, like the x2vga, or use the hacked ind bios with a home made cable

x2vga,
thats what I use with a 17" lcd monitor (I'm using it right now with a web browser on the xbox).
it will give you hi def for apps and a few games, eveything else plays at least as good as a good quality tv.

Yeah, just remember for games, the XBOX resolution is 640x480 or 720x480 for widescreen monitors.  So don't expect 1280x1024 resolution.

Can you play games in 720p on your monitor just by selecting 720p in the dash for the games which support it? The 720p monitor resolution is 1280 x 1024 right? If you play a game in that setting, can they be in widescreen?

you can play games in 720p, although it works a little weird on my monitor.  for some reason the screen vibrates a bit, but its not too much of a problem.  all you have to do is enable 720p in the dash.  You have to have your cable on HD mode not VGA mode though if you want that.  (unless you get a x2vga).

You will have to adjust the picture on 720p games manually (on your monitor) to make it the correct aspect ration, but its not too much of a hassle.  I'm not sure of the equivalent resolution, i thought it was close to 1024x768, but it looks really good is all i can say.

The equivalent resolution is 1280x1024.  do the math:

1280/1024 = approx. 1.3
4/3 = 1.3

1280/720 = 1.7
16/9 = 1.7

To make 1280x1024 into 1280x720, 152 vertical lines of pixels are removed on the top and 152 on the the bottom, resulting in letterboxing.

Anyways, I've been hearing some issues with monitors not handling 720p. I'm going to be playing Xbox360 with a monitor via MS's vga adapter, so I wanted to make sure I can play 720p letterboxed on a monitor, preferably the ibm g97.
