Vga Video On Video Off Video On Video Off
« on: July 10, 2005, 06:07:00 PM »

Hi all
I'm using this VGA mod and it works great with one of my monitors.
But the monitor I would like to use is a little wierd.
When I turn my xbox on my monitor come on and shows me the best picture I've ever seen then gose black. It dose this 2 time on the iND bios screen in just a few seconds. Now I don't know why but after letting the Xbox boot up all of a sudden Unleash comes up. WOW what a picture!!! No green hase as with the other monitor, and black is black. I put a game in and screen went black and shows nuthing.
I have not been able to get unleash to show agin, but I do see the bios screen on a regular bases (on then off on then off).
I'm using a sync stipper. iND Junkmonky bios. And a 19"ViewSonic A90 monitor.
Any fixes for this?? thanks

Sounds like it could be a wiring problem... double check all your connections.  And make sure you have enabled at least 480p in the ms bios.  What VGA guide did you follow?

Guide follow is one by JaredC01 and some other for reference on pinouts

I've checked the wiring and they all seem nicely connected. This monitor that dose work is a samsung and it has a green haze, most noticable when the screen is black. But the in game colors are nice. This one works with 480 and 720, but it dose not work right with higher res. So I think the cable is ok. A green haze is normal with some monitors right?

My problem monitor truned on with 480p only after Unleash wuz at the main menu.
So I'm thinking its short on power or signals arnt strong enough. It dose show the starting bios consestantly(on off on off) when I power the xbox up. I also got a screen with the xbox at its highest resolution, but that only lasted about 5 secs.
Do you guys think adding more power to the sync stripper would help?

Well thats about all I can come up with. Any help is appreshiated, thanks.

The monitor you're using might not support the resolution your xbox is giving it...

When I said to double check your connections, I meant to make sure everything is connected to the right location.  Check all your pin numberings.

It's fine to shield everything together.

No, it's not a power issue.  Sounds to me the only possible problems are wiring or resolutions incompatible with your monitor.  If you're using HD mode (switches 2+3 in jared's diagram) try VGA mode (1+3).  If you're using VGA mode, try HD mode.  When in VGA mode, the box will only display in 640x480.  HD mode will display in 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i.  (480p=720x480, not 640x480).  It is possible your monitor does not support one or more HD resolutions.

Ok I  tryed it with VGA (1+3) with no luck. When I did get a picture with it I was using 480p, best pictur ever. My cable is good but I going to build another so that I can integrate it in to the Xbox. I have another sync chip. Then another cable using 74hct14 chip just to have around.

This monitor go to a res of 1600x1200. Would chacking 480 and 720 on a PC be good enough? I don't know if PC dose interlace or progressive.
Also what dose the Xbox MSdash do when you use L trigger + R trigger + Both sticks. nterlace?  progressive?

i got to go to work i will work on the Xbox more when i get back tonight
Thanks for your help

a PC will generally output a progressive video signal.  Your video card may or may not output in 480p or 720p, however... those are generally unique to hdtv.  480p = 720x480 - the PC equivalent is 640x480.  720p = 1280x720 - pc equiv=960x720

If VGA mode didn't work, it's a problem with your cable, not your monitor.  You may have blown a capacitor or the sync chip in your cable.
