Questions About Id3 Tags

OK i have never dealt with these things before and have just recently learned about them i was wondering what exactly they are and how do you use them i heard that these would be better than going in and manually editing every song name so it shows up on my XLCD also what can i use to give the songs ID3 tags like is there a special program also i downloaded some songs from limewire a few months ago on a different computer then burned them and now i have downloaded them to my xbox will burned cds work with ID3 tags?
