Do I Need Dvdx2 To Play At 480p? What About 1080i?

First off, I have the official MS DVD dongle + remote.  However, from what I've read it seems like I need to use DVDX-2 in order to have 480p playback.  Is this true?  If I use DVDX-2, do I have to hex edit the program to enable 480p output?

Also, is there any way to have the X-Box upscale DVD playback to 1080i?  (like the newer DVD players that cost $125+)
