The Xbox-vga Tutorial Is So Damn Confusing!
« on: April 05, 2005, 04:32:00 AM »

This tutorial is so damn confusing. What the hell is a "0.1uF"?

(IMG:http://pictures.xbox-scene.com/2/vga-cable/image007.png)

Can anybody translate this tutorial into a list of what is needed to buy, and how to wire it together. Maybe even pics. Because for me, a pic made in paint with a bunch of lines connecting random letters and numbers like "0.1uF" just doesn't cut it or even make any sense at all to me.

Any help would be MUCH appreciated.

Thanx,
-Danny

I want you to take this as constructive.

Just put this in the 'too hard basket' and move along. Go out tomorrow and buy a ready-made solution, that way in a weeks time, you will be enjoying your Xbox on your monitor rather than cursing your failure to make this work (been there, done that).

Uh, that would be a .1 micro farad capacitor.   <_<

Or you could just not be an ass, and tell me what each parts are. That would be alot simpler and cheaper. And would take up about 2 minutes of your time. Or you could just be an ass...

Its not my intention to be an ass. I have dived into this myself with no luck at all. I am not alone either. If there are that many people here that have successfully built this cable, then they would be on here helping us out, but its seems that they are few and far between. Even knowing what these components are will not guarantee you any success with this.

So you see, it would take up considerable less time for me to tell you not to bother, and you inturn will waste less of your own time.
However, if you wish to push ahead, look at these resources.

Xbox AV pinout
Using the LM1881 Chip
Using the HiDef Output
Xbox VGA HOWTO

Best of luck with it, hope you get better results then I did. :)

I suggest looking at JaredC01's Tutorial...  everything A/V is in there, including this.  Good chance that any questions you have will be answered there.

And 'cause I'm a nice guy, I'll throw in a list of components for you, even though they're already listed on the diagram...  you'll need a vga connector, something to connect to the back of the xbox (such as an opened up xbox A/V cable), one 680K ohm resistor, 2 - 0.1 microFarad capacitors, and an LM1881 or LM1881N chip.  If you don't know what any of this means, find an introductory book on electronics and READ IT... this is simple stuff(no offense) that you can learn about in a couple hours of reading.

I'm sorry if I'm having trouble understanding why you're confused... the tutorial you refer to lists the components needed (same ones I just listed)

The lines on the diagram are WIRES... long lines of metal with plastic insulation around them. unless two lines meet in a T on the diagram, those two wires should not be connected.

@fahrenheit: I've seen a few of your replies, so I know you're capable. What makes this plan so sketchy and gives you bad results?  Did I read correctly that I have to take the box apart to jump those pins 9, 10, 13 and 14 on the AVIP?
Its just those transcoders,etc. are expensive....and I know .1micro also means 100nano ;)

nickbuhl, the sync seperator simply didn't work. What more can I say? I gave up on it long ago, after a lot of wasted hours. Yes, you will need to take the plug end on the cable apart to jump the pins.

"680kO resistor"
Does any one know what the "O" stands for? Is it L33's shorthand for ohms? Or is it a type of resistor?

What type of resistor does this plan call for? I did a search for 680k resistors on digikey's web site and here are a few of the types of resistors that I came up with:

Carbon Composition
Carbon Film
Ceramic
Chip Resistor - Thick Film and Metal Film
Chip Resistor - Thin Film
Metal Film
Metal Oxide Film

And what wattage should this resistor be too?

"2x 0.1µF capacitors"
And does anyone know any more specifics on these capacitors too?
(Voltage rating, Tolerance, Package/case?)

And does anyone know how to get ahold of this L33 guy?
I'd like to take a crack at this myself but L33 wasn't too specific about these parts.

And P.S.
Would this cable work on an un-MOD-ed xbox?

The O is ohm.

Don't get the chip resistors - they're only good if you plan on soldering this stuff to a board.  I suggest carbon film.

You don't need more than 1/4 or 1/2 watt.

just get 2 0.1 uF capacitors.

The cable will not work on an unmodded xbox.  You need either a modded bios (for box versions 1.0-1.4), or a nkpatcher patch for softmods.

Look here for a better VGA guide... much more recent.

if you want some help, i'd look in my sig, i've tried to pull a lot of the info together.

Its the same link as what jameson gave.  but, there is also some additional info in the thread that i haven't had the chance to update since i haven't been at home for a week.

good luck.

and btw, the cable will work on an unmodded xbox, but only if used with a projector.  this is because on a projector you can select to switch to YPbPr mode instead of RGB.  When used in this way, the cable is only acting as a RCA to 15pin plug adapter (which would cost about $20 total on ebay anyway, the same as this cable).
