No Hdtv Settings With Hd Av Pack
« on: March 03, 2005, 04:04:00 PM »

Hi,

I just bought a High-Definition AV Pack for my XBOX and connected it to plasma TV via component outputs. Audio outputs are connected to my receiver. I can see the picture, and hear the sound. In MS Dash audio menu i now can turn Dolby and DTS. However, in the video menu i don't see an HDTV settings. Only Normal, Letterbox and Widescreen. XBMC reports that i'm using a regular PAL settings (7XXx5XX). Any ideas how do i switch to HDTV modes (like 1080i)? Maybe some other soft besides MS dash can do the job?

I have XBOX SE (green), modded with Xecuter-2 modchip.

Thanks!

Are you sure your plasma is an HD plasma or an ED(Enhanced def)? Also to get HD modes the component cables should be plugged into Y/Pr/Pb component jacks on the back of the TV, not Y,Cr,Cb. Some jacks support both, some dont. Post the model number of your plasma.

If its PAL you need to switch to NTSC mode first I believe.  They assumed PAL XBOXs would not be connected to HDTVs.

I had the same problem on an NTSC xbox using an nonM$ brand HD adapter.  I had to use Avalaunch to enable the 480p, 720p, and 1080i modes on my eeprom.  After that everything worked perfectly.

I have a Panasonic TH-42PW7 (Viera). Technical specs are here http://www.leconcepts.com/plasma/panasonic/paplasma.htm. The true resolution of the display is 852x480 (EDTV), but it supports 1080i HDTV mode. The HD AV Pack is connected to it through three component connections, and the picture looks fine. I don't really understand how Xbox may know anything about capabilities of my TV, component is a unidirectional connector. I tried switching to NTSC but MS Dash still does not show the options. I will try Avalaunch, maybe it'll help.

Thanks!

Ok, avalaunch sorted things out. I'm now able to feed 720p and 1080i to my plasma, and it looks fantastic. The only problem i see is a slight flicker, especially in 1080i. This seems to be related to NTSC mode, as i've never seen this in PAL. Any ideas how to get rid of this?

#1 dont send your set a 1080i signal, your sets natively progressive so
doing this will lead to de-interlacing of the signal and could produce
noticable artifacts on the screen depending on the quality of the
line-doubler.
#2 your flicker could be what I described above, or could just be from
the low 60hz refresh of NTSC mode. Since the 50hz PAL refresh will
essetially be doubled by the set to 100hz, this might be why you dont see
the flicker when in PAL mode.

Bottom line is your set cant fully resolve all the detail of HD so I would
not worry about HD modes, just use 480p.

I'm using 720p, and it looks much better than 480p or 1080i (interlacing indeed is not a good thing for the plasma). Why should i use 480p? I believe if have a 720p encoded movie it'll look better if fed to the screen in its native format (even though my screen does not have 1280x720 pixels).
As for the flicker, for some reason it became almost unnoticeable, but i can see it in all NTSC modes (even non-HDTV). I don't see any such problems with PAL.

I say that because its just a general rule to go by to send your set a
signal that matches its native format. That way you eliminate any
scaling artifacts. Downscaling will always look better than upscaling,
because upscaling does not create more detail, only more pixels and not
all of them are active. Take for instance a JPEG file on your PC, looks like
shit when you enlage it, right? But make it smaller and you get a cleaner, and
sharper image. I suppose this same principle applies to your situation.

I'm a newbie here and trying to get the best out of this black box. Have a Pioneer 434HDE HDTV Plasma (1024x768) supporting up to 1080i and a pioneer NSDV-1000 audio set with optical in (coax/spdif). The xbox has soft mod on it and got Avalaunch and XBMC up and runing.

Like to buy HD AV pack with component and Digital audio...Though in Europe however as Bill's crew didn't think HD would be a Euro thing...Any advise where to buy this original MS version.... (saw some bad reviews on  non original ones...)

Anyway : Can it be used in combination with Softmod and PAL unit...?

Thx for advise

Im no expert on softmods, but yeah I believe you need enigmah to
switch your signal to NTSC, then you can use the HD pack.

I had to use engimah to switch my PAL unit to NTSC. Only than i could use all the HD modes. As for the MS vs. non-MS HD packs, AFAIK the only issue is with XBOX recognizing the pack, so you'll be able to switch the modes. Mine is supposedly MS branded (at least the label says so), but MS dashboard still didn't recognized it. I had to use Avalaunch to make the HD options available (i heard that you can also shortcut some pins on the XBOX connector to achieve the same effect). I believe you can do the same trick with any HD pack (not just MS branded). All you need is correctly connected composite connectors.

Is it possible to set these modes in Avalaunch in a softmod xbox?
