Homebrew Vga Cable Problem

Check the easy bits first.
  • Have you to enable SoG on your display? Do you know for sure it is auto recognising the input type.
  • Using JaredC01's disgram in the A/V forum to make sure you have select the right mode for VGA.
  • Are you sure you have enabled the progressive modes in the M$ dash. You neded a HiDef pack or the right mode selected to achieve this.
  • Is the VGA bios you have installed compatible with the version of your mobo.

The fact you stated that the display is indicating "out of range" suggests to me that you are still feeding it with an interlaced 15KHz signal. Use only the mode select pins stated in JaredC01's diagram or those in my All Outputs Configurable thread.

There are other sources of info, but  know the above is correct.

First thing I would say is make sure you've enabled 480p.  There's a few posts in JaredC01's thread on how to do this.  (Easiest way I found is to use Avalaunch... it gives you access to all of the MS dash setup options in any video mode)

Second, make sure you do have a VGA bios installed.  iND-BiOS 5001 VGA is a wonderful choice.

The MS Dash does work in VGA mode if you patch it for 480p.

I posted in JaredC01's thread a while back on doing hi-def VGA output (as in 720p and 1080i)... take a look at it here.

If you think your MS dash is the problem and don't feel like patching it, you can put in a game to test your cable.  If it doesn't work, chances are you haven't enabled 480p in the dash.

I've had plenty of experience with VGA output, so let me know if you have any more problems.

Do you have to have a chip or a softmod to use the vga adapter or can you just get a hi def pack and use that...i ask becuase i am going to build a portable xbox using a 17 inch lcd monitor mounted directly to the top of the xbox.

You have to have a VGA bios installed in order to get VGA output (unless you use something like X2VGA, but I don't know how feasable it is to mount that inside the xbox)

So yes, you need either a modchip or a softmod.

ok i have a SOG monitor, so i build a cable following the guide on the xbox scene main site, but when i plug it in my monitor i get a message saying wrong frequency, ive had problems making the cable, as im not sure how i join pins 9,10,13,14 the diagram shows a line from 9-10 and then lines from 14-10 and 13-9 so do i just join 9-10 and 13-14 or do i do what the picture says and join 9-10 and 10-14 and 9-13??

I really suggest reading JaredC01's thread here

It's worth reading through all 20 pages of it... everything that's been done is documented somewhere in there.

My diagram has 11-12 connected instead of 9-10 in order to get access to the higher HDTV modes on my monitor  (720p and 1080i).  Generally, if your monitor was made fairly recently it' should be able to display in those modes.

Enabling 480p will not keep your xbox from working on your tv.

It is possible to blindly turn on 480p (and you need to if you don't have an hdtv to hook up to do it).  Instructions on this are in JaredC01's thread, roughly page 3 or 4 if my memory serves me.

In order to enable any of the hdtv modes (480p, 720p, and 1080i), you have to hook up an hdtv pack (or equivalently, connect pins 11-12 and 13-14).  So if I were doing it again, I'd just make a VGA cable with pins 11-12 and 13-14 connected, follow the instructions in JaredC01's guide.

Just found it... page 7 (I was a little off)

You have to ground pins 11 - 12, and 13 - 14. That will give you the high def mode in the XBox dashboard.

To set 480p blindly in the XBox Dash:

Restart your XBox, and you should be in 480p.

ok so how would i activate the 480 with my modchip? coz my xbox loads up evoX first, should i turn of the modchip and enable the 480 or navigate blindly through evoX and activate ms dash from there?

*edit*

ok ive also read that i must be in NTSC mode, as my xbox is PAL, im going to try this and ill report back!

my monitor is definatly SOG check here

im looking through the forums and only thing i can see is thta it could be my monitor is NOT SOG, but every website ive looked at says my monitor IS SOG, so im confused!

Yes exactly. Get three RCA to BNC adaptor plugs for a cheaper option.

The Bios works fine with a v1.1
