How To Connect Xbox To My 5.1 Sound Sys

Assuming your system has toslink/optical audio in you can just buy the HD pack or the Advanced A/V pack and an optical cable. Then you just plug it in and select the right settings in the dash.

You connect the XBOX to a surround sound amplifier via an optical digital audio connector.

Some (cheap quality) computer speakers do not have support for an optical connection and only supply 3 mini connectors (they look like headphone plugs).  If your speakers are of this type, they won't work with the XBOX without getting some type of decoder than can take the digital signal from the XBOX.  Although I have yet to ever see one, Logitech supposedly makes a cheap solution:
