What about XBMC? Am i just watching whatever (DVD copy, dvd rip, xvid or otherwise) in 480? will it 'switch' to a higher res? anything i should know/enable/tweak to get the best possible picture?

I dont think evox supports high def yet. Thats why you see the 480 in the upper corner. Thats your incoming signal, but it is "upconverted" by the tv to the native resolution that your TV suppports, if you've got a RP CRT, then its 1080i.
As far as XBMC, it is high def capable, but needs to be configured to do so. Set it to the native rate of your set. If the content you watch with XBMC is not sourced in high def(720p or higher) then it will be upconverted either by XBMC, or the tv itself. However upconversion is an approximation and does not mean it automatically becomes high def, as you cant pull detail out of thin air.

If your HDTV supports both 480i and 480p on the same input, there's really no reason to enable progressive on the dash.  You run the risk of having a compatibility issue if you take your XBOX to a different house that supports 480i on component.  That "secret" feature was enabled because some HDTVs only allow 480p on their HD inputs, so you wouldn't be able to see your dash at all on a TV like that.

Yo Mr. Ed - is HDTVArcade.com your site?  It's a good reference, but I was just wondering how often they update it.  There are a few new ones not up yet.

There are a few upconverting dvd players, but all high def sets already upconvert,
so an upscaling dvd player is a waste of $$$$.
