Adding Hard-wired S-video Neuters Hd Kit...
« on: January 04, 2005, 05:48:00 PM »

I've got an Xbox with the HD kit for hooking up my projector - but I also use it S-Video as well.

Not wanting to spend $30CDN on the "Advanced" M$ breakout kit - I decided to go my own way and install the S-Video and Digital S-PDIF (coax) cables just like in this guide.

Tried out the S-Vid afterwards - looks fine, Digital Output shows as an option in the M$ Settings (haven't actually tested the audio output yet) - everything seems great.

Plug my HD Kit in afterwards - unit starts up S-Vid instead. Seems the soldering of the 3 points in that guide does 2 things, yes it enables the digital output - and yes it tricks the Xbox into thinking you've got an SCART cable plugged in. Unfortunately the latter trick seems to override the detection of the HD kit and the unit will not start up in progressive scan output through the Component Video Cables.

So what I ended up doing was instead of bridging the 3 points together - I JUST soldered pin 18 to GND as depicted in this Digital S-PDIF guide:

My S-Vid works fine now when plugging in the oldskool SCART cable but plugging it into nothing (original Xbox video cable) - the digital output still shows on the M$ config screen as an option, and the HD kit works fine when it's plugged in as well.

Whether or not the Digital Coax still works with the optical trying to run as well from the HD coax remains to be seen - but one thing is for certain - modding the unit to run without the A/V cable plugged in BORKS it for plugging the HD kit later.

Has anyone ever came across this before?
