Use XBMC that will allow you to upscale the video to a higher resolution.

Yes you have to have an xbox component cable or vga transcoder (a cable that will allow you to set up the higher res modes in the ms dash) to watch/play anything higher then 480i.

While xbmc 720p dvd playback looks great, it doesn't work with all dvd's (kind of buggy), and there is no menu screen (the movie will just auto start to play), which isn't that big of a deal.

Or, you could get the latest build of Avalaunch dashboard, which has a built in dvd player (codec) that allows 720p dvd playback.  It works flawlessly, and has menu support too.

EDIT: Also, 720p looks better then 1080i (720p gives a much cleaner, solid picture with less flickering then 1080i).

how do i go about getting the Avalaunch to play DVDS that way?

i checked the XML file and my settings are like this

<audioplayer enabled="1" path="C:\xboxdash.xbe" />
-
 <movieplayer enabled="1" path="E:\apps\dvdx2\default.xbe" />

should i change that to a 0 or something?

Is there somewhere in XMBC settings where I have to enable 720p? I can play soulcalibre II at 720p but my DVDs are still playing in 480p

I am using X2VGA+

Only the most recent avalaunch has the new featured dvd player.  Just go into the menu settings under dvd, and enable it.  It's as simple as that.  There is no need to go into the .xml and set it.

You are nearly there...

change "Use internal DVD movie player: disabled" to enabled,  no need to touch the xml file,  reboot and put a dvd in.

I find though that the chapter select etc. doesn't seem to work but it's no biggy.

 There are no seperate settings for the AVA DVD player. The DVD playback is upsampled to whatever resolution the  Avalaunch dash is using.

I am not sure if Avalaunch has problems with displaying the dvd at 1080i. I know XBMC has issues displaying certain DVD at 1080i.

But why use 1080i ? I find that 720p looks better than 1080i. Although 720p has fewer lines it also has the advantages of progressive scanning and a constant vertical resolution of 720 lines, making it better able to handle motion. 1080i has more scanning lines but suffers from interlaced scanning. 1080i is only displaying 540 lines lines at a time.

Well, try popping in a dvd while avalaunch is at 1080i then see what happens.
