Green Vga Fix For Hdd Games
« on: December 02, 2004, 01:13:00 AM »

Well I was playing around with xbmc and its skins and on a whim I checked out the "My Programs" section. After setting up so I could see the subdirectories I tried fable, and expected to get the usual green crap.To my suprise, totally perfect colour! Then I tried panzer dragoon orta, chronicles of riddick, morrowind and surreal64...they all worked.Avalaunch and the like seem to be messing things around because when I tried to boot from dvd(which i rarely do) they worked properly also.I should note that I am using ind-bios on a focus box,in case this does not fix things for the yoshihiro bioses or for people with conexant video chips. At least I don't have to piss around with the internal sync now since this seems to totally fix it(although I have not tried all of my games yet)
Now if could just fix the slight diagnoal lines in the  background of my picture,I'd be set :)

Are you using the patched vga ind-bios 5001 (the current 5003 ind-bios are not vga patched)?  Because the only way you'll ever be able to get true vga color is via the vga bios.  Also, try starting a game of morrowind up, because at the title screen of morrowind there are all the right colors, but as soon as you start a game up it reverts back to green.  I have not been able to get surreal64 emu at any point in color; just always green.

Yes I am using ind-bios-5001-vga ,and yes you are right about morrowind. and it seems to be random at which point it will turn green, i.e sometimes straight from the loading screen sometimes halfway though.Surreal64 boots in colour although  the game i tried crashed(probably unrelated issue) and I haven't bothered to test it since...I'll have a look a bit later.I also tried some other dashboards since xbmc isn't a particularly well designed interface in my opinion, but none worked properly.I think i'll just use quicklaunch from avalaunch to load xbmc when ever I want to play games.

I have a sync on green monitor (so a sync seperator was not neccessary), and the 5001 vga ind-bios.  Avalaunch is the dash i use, and thereby launch my games from there.  The only games that reset the bios and thus turn the game back to green that i have tested, were: splintercell, morrowind, crimson skies, and all N64 emus.  Even when i access them through xbmc i get the exact same thing.

I have a sync on green monitor also, and when I launch a game from any other dashboard besides xbmc I get the green tint in 90% of games with dead or alive beach volleyball and halo 2 being the only exceptions I can think of right now. When I boot avaluanch straight from bios,it uses correct colours as does anything else(but for morrowind and a few others I expect). If i boot into avalaunch and then switch to another dashboard from avalaunch it always turns green(except for xbmc),and then when I boot back into avaluanch it turns green also.It is most likely the difference between video encoders that is showing these different issues...perhaps there is just something missing in the coding for the focus chips(it is not officially supported) which gives these issues but despite this, the focus chips seem to have better support for vga since I can run surrealx in colour(I still haven't attempted to load a game yet however)

I can't edit? Anyway just tried launching a couple of games with surreal-fdb-v3 and they all exhibit the green tint as does the menu after quiting after a game. This is the same behaviour as seen with launching applications from anything but xbmc.I expect this is just a bios bug then so if this were fixed then surreal(and everything else) would work fine without the video mode needing to be re-initialised every time...at least in the case of xboxes with focus chips.

foehammer,
Do you know that the game resets the Bios? I always thought that it changed
to a video mode that was incompatible, and was looking at trying to patch games
(not easy) to a different mode. If the Bios is flashed, how is it reset?

It probably does not reset the bios, all i ment was it acted like it reset the vga bios, and reverted back to as if there was none.  For example, when i game reverted back to green, no matter what you did, even returning back to the dashboard, the picture remained green.  You have to physically reboot the xbox to reinitiate the vga bios.

Booting from XBMC solved the problem for me with FlatOut, but not with Top Spin (both are PAL). Top Spin starts off fine, but after the into movie the screen turns green. My box is a v1.3 Conexant. I have a SoG monitor with BNC inputs and am using a component cable with the VGA IND-BIOS.

Just out of interest, is your component cable modified at all to be in VGA mode, or is it in standard HDTV component mode?
