Is This Normal?

I recently had my box modded and tried downloading a DVD to the HD.  I play back the HD file with the media player and the picture is not as smooth as the DVD.  I see lines in the picture.  Is something not up to par?  I play the DVD and has no problems with it.  Any suggestions?  Thanks!
