I Have A Progressive Scan Tv But..
« on: October 25, 2004, 10:51:00 AM »

Hi guys,

i have a progressive scan tv "Samsung RPTV" and i have bought the official MS HD cable.

The problem is i have just looked on the back of my tv and i have no component inputs :( .

Is there any way that i can get HD from my xbox to my tv?

My xbox is UK pal modded with an xecuter 2.3 and is running NTSC using the Enigma video switch.

My tv is definetly progressive scan 100htz and it should also support 720 resolution.

Am i screwed because i have no component inputs on my TV?

Thanks

well by component do you mean svhs (superVHS) connectors?

i would have though that you could use any type of video connector, they all display teh same thing, just a different plug.

if push comes to shove, you can get a normal cable, and change which cables it jumpers to get the higher quality picture

What the fuck?!  That is soooo wrong!!!

No he doesn't mean S-Video, and no they DON'T all display the same thing.

The only way you can have progressive 480, or 720p or 1080i or 1080p is through other types of connectors such as component (three seperate RCA connectors for video), VGA (9 pin like on a computer), DVI, or FireWire.  Not through S-Video, or a single composite connector (single RCA).

Does this TV even exsist? All I can find are links to the website you posted. Anyway, I'm not familiar with UK TVs, but I'm assuming it has an RGB Scart that you could use.

Ok, so it has SCART.  Being in the US I don't know tons about that connector, but I've seen people post about adapting the XBOX to SCART.  unsure.gif

OK, this is the problem with marketing. 100Hz progressive and HD progressive are entirely different things. 100Hz progressive has been around for many years and is a form of flicker reduction that is post processed by the TV for all incoming signals, whether it be TV reception, VCR etc. (this may start a war, but it is worthless technology that creates more problems than it solves!)

HD progressive which is used by games consoles and DVD players, is newer technology and can only be delivered by means of digital inputs, such as DVI or component video (even component confusingly comes in progressive and non progressive flavours). SCART is capable of delivering a Component signal, but not a progressive one.

It is a minefield for anyone who does not know the difference and we have the manufacturers and their marketing teams to thank for that.
Best advice when choosing to buy a display device, is to take along an Xbox and an Advanced HD pack and a game or two that support 480p, 720p and 1080i.

i think your all forgetting one important thing. its just a tv. and can you really tell the difference between the different resolutions?

no, not unless they are standing side by side. and i dont think anyone will have 3 or 4 tvs sitting next to each other just to say ones shit compared to the rest.

i say if u san see a picture and hear some sound, then your set. you have nothing to complain about.

if your that paranoid about the picture your getting, dude, get a fucking life. you need one

You haven't heard a good 5.1 set and seen a HDTV, did you?

The difference between a ''normal'' (50/60 Hz, conected using composite) and a ''Uber'' (HDTV, 16:9 and connected though Component) TV is quite big. The sound that 99% of the TV produce sucks ass almost every 5.1 set is a lot beter than a TV and a custom chosen kick ass 5.1 set will blow your ass away!

Everybody that have heard/seen this will know what a difference it makes!

Erm...yes, you can tell the difference between different resolutions.

Can you tell the difference when you are running your PC in 640*480 and 800*600?

Syberia running at 1080 on a 42inch plasma looks allot different that running at 480!

There are not so many games supporting 1080 but many that support 720

If your TV is HD then get a HD pack and enjoy.
