Xbox On 5.1 Headphones
« on: August 26, 2004, 05:35:00 PM »

You cannot use a 6 channel discrete analogue headphone system with the XBOX. The XBOX has no decoding built in like some cheap DVD players do. If I were you i would do one of two things.
  • Save up for a speaker package. You know you want it so wait till you can afford one.
  • Use the 6 channel headphones to create Pseudo Surround aka the 'Hafler' effect.
The Hafler effect.

The Hafler effect uses information in a stereo analogue soundtrack that is out of phase to the majority of the information to create a pretend surround environment. It can be very effective, but depends on what material you are playing at the time. With the 6 channel analogue headphones , I guess you have 3 RCA's.
  • 1 for Stereo Left and Right
  • 1 for Centre and Sub
  • 1 for stereo rear effect Left and Right
Connect the two rear channels together in series. (Left) (-) + ---> - (+) (Right).
Take the two positive  (+) connections from the front (Left) and (Right) and connect them to the remaining (L -) and (R +)  from the rear.

This will give you a much more open and enveloping soundstage when playing games. It won't be great all the time but for now until funds allow it's not bad.
