Problem With Hd On New Tv
« on: August 23, 2004, 10:57:00 PM »

I just got a Toshiba 46H84. I read in the manual that it recommends 720p as an input signal. I used a Monster cable to hook it up to the xbox. When I start Evox, the startup flash screen comes up, then I see two of the menu screens on each side of my screen for about a second, then it goes back to normal.

Also, when I try to play Madden 2005, and Soul Calibur2, the picture dosnt seem like its running in 720p.

My TV has a feature that converts signals to 540p and 1080i only in the service menu... which one of those is a better choice for my xbox games?  Ive never heard of 540p so Im pretty clueless on this matter.

Ive linked a copy of my service manual so you can read the specs and help me out on this weird problem.

Mr. Ed- Thanks for the advise on the TV, the picture on this toshiba is amazing!

beerchug.gif Major congrats!

Ok, so you need two things, you need the HD/AV pack from MS (or Monster HD pack).  Once you've connected that to your XBOX, you need to launch the MS dash.  It should now have options to enable the HD modes, 720p and 1080i.  If you modded your box, following the instructions you should still have the original MS dash on your HD as the default when you deactivate your modchip right?

the double menu thing is perfectly normal as thats jstu the TV switching to a prgressive input.  try ur dvd player (assuming it has progressive scan, and a button to turn progressive scan on and off)... when u swtich between the 2 modes the tv will display a double image for a second and then display properly.

the flashing/flickering of the EA logo is normal as well since again, its the TV switching resolutions.  the dash usually runs in 480i/p or 1080i or whatever u set it to, and when u start a game in 720 it has to switch to that setting.  does your TV tell you what inpur resolution it is receiving? out sony HDTV tells onscreen for a second what input it is currently getting

Exactly.  Here's the deal, if it's a game that supports 720p, and you've enabled 720p, and you can actually play the game (ignore some flickering at the begning as it changes modes) then you are probably in 720p.

QUOTE (modthebox @ Aug 24 2004, 11:35 AM)
when I start a game that uses a HD mode, like madden 2005, the EA Sports startup screens flashes off and on a couple times before it starts.

Uh, Madden 2005 only supports 480p.  blink.gif

oops, forgot to check to see if madden was 480p or 720p- just assumed.

Ok so now I understand the flickering and double menu... great! Thanks

As for the resolution-
My TV only notes that it is a HD Signal- and lets me select weather I want to display it in 540p or 1080i.   Why 540p and not 720p?  Anyways- which should I have selected to play xbox games. I think my 720p games like soul calibur2 are being down-converted to 540p.

Thanks for the help guys

I have the Toshiba 51H83 and I think they upscale to 1080i if 720p automatically if it isn't selected.  All tosh models natively will switch to 720p if that is what the signal produced is (that's why you love Toshiba and Hitachi, 720p natively!) I have owned 3 versions of Toshiba (had an old 43" 1st, then a 46 , now a 51 which is 4 months old.)  You can't beat the price/performace vs. $$$$ in any other brand.  The picture is superb!

And you are correct.  When hitting the Info button on the remote, it never shows what resolution signal it is, just that it is in HDTV mode......

Also, look on page 12 of the manual in the side note (upper right had corner of the page) it shows that the TV will display 480p/720p when connected to the HDTV Colorstream connections.

Hope you are happy with your TV....I know I am (I also got a great deal on mine, it was only boxed on left before the new H/HX84 came out and I got it for $1700Cdn which is about $1380USD, couldn't beat that!)

I've played soul caliber 2 and it looks absolutely amazing running @720p (I'm positve it is @720p, nothing has ever looked that good on my TV other than HDTV sat!)....
