The cables they bundle are pretty good quality.  I've been happy with them and I'm pretty picky.

Personal opinion but i would get the monster gaming hi-def pack... more money, but better cables....

just remember, cables are for life, chances are you will change tvs more often than you change cables so go with the best that you can afford.... also, your tv is only as strong as it's weakest link (in this case, cables are the weak link)

then again if youre going with the best cables money can buy then you wouldnt really go with Monster brand anyways would you, since we all know its a lot of marketing hype?

i know it was discussed in a long old topic but did anyone from that thread ever really compare the monster 400x to the MS HD with upgraded cables? did the breakout box end up being the weak link?

Yeah, the thread used to be pinned so I'm guessing a search will turn it up.

First - a lot of people can't tell the difference.  Of those that could the screen sizes were generally large (50"+ for most but one guy had a 42") and the displays were setup at least to the level of using DVE/Avia and making sure convergence was correct on CRT based technologies (all were HDTV so take that into account).  The consensus seemed to be on this site and others that upgrading the stock MS cables makes an improvement but not a huge one even when very high-end cabling is used.  When comparing the Monster offering to the stock MS offering with upgraded cables people either prefered Monster or it was a draw with Monster having more vivid colors.  This was even against very high-end upgraded cables (which the Monster is not but it is decent - so this would be anti placebo for the most part as one would expect component cables costing a few hundred to outperform) which I would interpret to mean that either the breakout box was the limiter of the supperior cables for the MS offering or beyond a point cables don't matter for this application.  Like I said though, a lot of people insist there is no difference and your mileage may vary.  Monster makes some fairly good cables (there are different lines of quality which most Monster lovers and bashers don't seem to realize although their pricing and sales are marketing - funny how the most passionate are generally the most ignorant) but the 400x is just a decent one - not high-end by any means.  However if you lay it on the counter and compare it directly to what MSFT gives you for $19, well that is really a budget offering IMO.  Still, a lot of people like it just fine.

What are some good HD component cable alternatives then?

I've been looking online and the only options seem to be Monster/MS AV pack.

Anyone?
