Widescreen And 480p

Well, so is your XBOX displaying things right but your TV isn't?  I think it's a pretty common problem to have to change the aspect ratio of the TV manually to match whatever the game comes up as.

I just purchased the same Sony TV (34" though) and found out if you turn on 480p in the dashboard the 16:9 flag sent by games to the TV will not be sent.  I have set mine to the following:

480p no, 720p yes, 1080i yes.

Now 16:9 games display in 16:9 and 4:3 games display 4:3.  As mentioned above, you know you are displaing 720p or 1080i if you can not change the screen settings or DRC settings.

I have the same problem with my xbox and my 55" Sony Wega. I also had to set my 480p to off. The good news is, on my tv, I can really tell no difference between 480p and 480i and I would much rather have 480i and widescreen over 480p and standard screen. I think the sony does a conversion on all signals anyway before sending them to the screen, maybe that is why I notice little difference. For what it is worth, I have also noticed that my cheap dvd player shows now difference in picture quality either when I set it to 480i vs 480p. By the way, I think the problem you are seeing is just a bug in the xbox and it is not really set up properly to provide 480p in a 16X9 format.
