Optical Cable: No Sound!
« on: August 02, 2004, 05:45:00 AM »

Hello,

I just bought a new scart for the xbox with opical ou and s-video out, but when i connect the optical cable i get no sound from my receiver.
Within the ms dashboard i selected dolby digital, so i don't know what to do next...

Also tried the optical cable with my dvd player and that does work, so there's nothing wrong with my cable...

Anybody any suggestions?

thx in advance

Some other people have had trouble with third-party SCART cables, so if thats what you have, see if you can test with a different one.

Unplug the optical cable from the Receiver end and power up your console. If you don't see a little red light at the end of the cable, then your SCART is broken.

I'm having the same problem with my Monster cables.  The light shines, but there's still no sound.

I think there might be something wrong with the cable because when i was plugging in back in once, it detected the audio and sound came out of the speakers for a split second and then stopped, so I moved it again and got a split second of sound, and then it stopped for good.  My guess is the cables are magically screwed up somehow since they've been working for years, or the input on the Xbox is messed up, so I'll open it up and check.  But what I don't like is that the optical adapter won't work with either of my Xboxes so that makes me think the optical monster attachment is messed up because the optical cable itself works in other electronics.  I called up Monster and the dick on the other end kept telling me that the cables aren't messed up, it's the Xbox.  Then why won't they work on any Xbox?  He just kept repeating himself.  I'll call back tomorrow and maybe I'll get someone more helpful.

hmmm, when you tested with the DVD player did you test the same optical input on your AV Receiver? just in-case its a setup issue. How tight is the connection of the optical cable to the connector at the Xbox end of the SCART? If you get movement, see if applying a little pressure inwards and also pulling the connector out a little helps.

yes i tested with the same optical input on the receiver, both ps2 and dvd player work fine with the optical input, just the Xbox won't...

I the meanwhile the company who i bought it from has already send me another one , but still the same problem, still no sound at all...

Do you get sound on the Flubber animation at the start, or while in the MS Dash? This sound is PCM stereo if you can hear this, then there is possibly a problem with the receiver not interperating the in-game Dolby Digital, if you hear nothing whatsoever then perhaps its the Xbox.

You really need to test with two of everything inorder to get to the bottom of this. You've got two SCARTS, you now need two optical cables, two Xboxs and two AV receivers. Start asking friends who have this stuff.

I also have the same problem, can't get any sound using optical output. Reciever is tested with PS2 and DVD-player and works fine. AV-cable was tested with friend's box and optical output worked. Any suggestions what could solve this problem were appreciated.

Edit:
Found out solution. I had to pull out optical cable from AV-adaptor about 2mm. Didn't came first in mind that cable could be too firmly placed, reliable 3rd party AV-cable.
