in response to this guy, the controller is small enough to hide away if you find it that hideous.  As far as cost, i'm not sure what home system he's talking about, Wal-Mart?  Seriously, a home setup is gonna run you between $900-$2000, this is a cheap, incredibly high quality alternative to a 7.1 System with full Bose speakers...you obviously don't own a set of the 680s!

Whatever.

While I can't compare them side by side, I would be willing to say this system for $170 is more expandable and sounds better.

If you want to spend under $100 computer speakers are the way to go.  Once you get close to $200 though, you want to invest in something that handles other inputs, does video switching, and is actually a home theater system. beerchug.gif

How can the Z-680s be an alternative to a bose 7.1 system....there 5.1 !!!

And I got a JVC receiver, sub, center, and satalites for $399.99 and my home theatre sounds amazing!

EXACTLY!

Z-680s are computer speakers! They're not meant to be in a home-theatre. Like I said before, maybe if they were a LOW-COST alternative you may settle for them, but they are expensive as hell!

I've got two subs in my room. Both of them are using 12" drivers in 3.5cubic foot enclosures.......thats approaching bloody loud.

Something that someone might consider loud another person might not. Plain and simple.

I have the Z-680 for my computer and a multi-thousand dollar home entertainment system for the xbox. In comparison the logitechs are damn good for gaming and descent for music, they actually make MP3s sound good. The bass is super loud and I have it set real low so its not so over powering. I have used that kenwood system as well and it is good but basically you are getting a good reciever with lots of upgrade options but very bad speakers that are easily outdone by the logitechs. The only thing bad about the Z-680 is that it buzzes when its on.

Hmm, I haven't heard the Logitech's but I do have a set of Klipsch 5.1 Ultras hooked into a Creative Labs DDTS-100 Digital Decoder.  They rock, and they work not only for my computer, but also for my Home theater.  I wanted a seperate decoder, so I went with klipsch, and I have also heard that logitechs have a high failure rate but who knows. My klipsch rock, so I would recommend them.

PROS:
- Sound Great
- Capable of High Volumes
- Nice sonic range
- Able to handle music with lots of lows/mids
- No distortion

CONS:
- Control Unit is FAULTY
- LCD on front is hard to read (backlit BLUE)
- Remote Control has NO RANGE.
- Logitech Support Sucks (when something goes wrong)
- Older Control Units made "hissing" sounds

I would NOT recommend these to anyone, even with the PRO's I mentioned. The control unit for the Z-680 is on its 4th revision already, as the components inside it are failing left/right. I have had 3 of the 4 different revisions of the control unit at this point.

Basically all the audio "processing" is occuring in the control unit, so when that thing goes bad, you are SOL. Logitech support will replace it if it is under warranty (they know the units break), but it is a pain in the arse to mail it to them and wait 4-6 weeks for your replacement. On top of that, of course, you are paying for the shipping to California, and for the long distance phone call to support  dry.gif

Logitech support has told me that they are no longer developing "high gain" speaker systems, as they had too many problems with the Z-680. They blamed my failures on the fact that I listen to them on "high volumes", which is total BS. I haven't ever had to turn it up past 60%, and I hardly even use it...

I now have a custom cooling fan mounted on the control unit to help keep it cool, incase heat was ever an issue with it. At this point I have to baby the damn thing and keep my fingers crossed it doesn't break again because I am now out of warranty and I don't think they will fix it again sad.gif

MY ADVICE: Save the extra $$ and get a true name brand receiver and some decent speaks  biggrin.gif

lol, I am a musician, go to lots of concerts, and I have a $1000 system in my car. I don't think much of anything is loud anymore. People who ride in my car are just pussies!  jester.gif

Currently in Phuket area but might end up back in Bangkok (where I saw the older sets).

Was hoping that it will be cheaper here than in my home country (but dunno when I will be back there). Might have to mail order from overseas but not too keen due to potential problems mentioned here, would cost heaps mailing it back if it fails.

Thanks for any help.
