Power Problem
« on: June 15, 2004, 08:41:00 AM »

ok big problem here.... but i just wanna kno one thing.

i brought my xbox from america to italy for a vacation. but my xbox is ntsc... and it takes 110 volts AC.

in italy the power outlets are 220 volts AC so i bought a transformer that brings it down from 220 to 110.

wen i plugged in my xbox.... it turned on for a few seconds.... and then all of a sudden.... it exploded, and tons of smoke came out of the rear fan....

i kno it sounds hilarious... but just help me out on this one.

DO I HAVE TO CHANGE JUST THE POWER SUPPLY? OR THE MOBO AND SHIT?

please.... cuz i have to order the new piece as soon as i find out!

thanks guys

You have to tell us what happened first.

If the power source was 220v 50hz and you stepped it down to 110v 50hz, then the Xbox should have been fine. 60hz of course would have been fine.

Obviously your transformer either didn't do it's job or was not set properly...

So what happened?

exactly my point! i think the transformer didnt function properly, but i really cant promise that, cuz i use the same transformer to use my pc speakers that require 110 volts. and it works fine with the 220 outlets.

so when i plugged the power in to the wall, the xbox turned on without me even touching the power, and then turned off. so i used the power switch, to turn it back on, and like 4 seconds later, i heard a loud POP inside, and i see tons and tons of smoke coming out of the back.

i just wanna kno if its the power supply, or if im gonna have to change the mobo and stuff.

pls let me kno!

thanks

You'll need a new PSU for the Xbox.
