Game Freeze
« on: June 15, 2004, 06:33:00 AM »

hi peeps. i run all my game of my hdd. i was fitting an 80 mm fan in and i dropped my hhd (it was only about a 1 inch drop) and i think this may be the cause for my problem. Anyway, so after i installed my fan i tried gta vice city and it loads a fraction of the loading bar and keeps freezing. so i tried my other games on my hdd and they all worked perfectly, they didnt even freeze once. so i just deleted it of my hdd coz i thought there might have been sumting gone wrong in the game, then i tried a copy of gta vice city on a disk and same problem, it froze at the exact same place.
please help me.

This game does tend to freeze up occasionally but never consistently in the same place and I've never seen a loading screen freeze.  I don't know that this is really an audio/video issue.  To be honest, I'd rent a copy and try it with the rental.  If it's not happening on any other game and it happens even when your Xbox is cold (i.e. turn it off, let it sit, boot from the DVD immediately in GTAVC) it's likely the game or your copy of the game.  If that doesn't solve it I don't see anything you can really do since it's only one game and doesn't seem to be hardware related.

Eek - forgot one thing and this may really suck.  When it's loading it is actually loading your most recent game save.  Your save may be the corrupt issue or maybe something in a cache file.  I'd move your saves to a PC or memory card, delete them from the Xbox, and try again.  If that fails I'd do the same process except reboot the Xbox and load around 4-5 different games (not sure on number) to clear the cache.

QUOTE (rabalaba @ Jun 15 2004, 09:50 PM)
Check your date in Evox. It might be set to the year 8907 or something like that if you left your xbox unplugged too long.  Vice city for some reason doesn't like this year and it wond load up.  To fix this run the MS dashboard go to settings and set the correct date.

I was just about to say that..  It WILL fix the problem. I have had similar problems.  It won't happen on a stock box, because if the date is bad, the dash forces you to enter at least something.

The date gets set to 8907 with certain BIOSes when the xbox is unplugged for more than 2 hours or if the aerogel capacetors (those big cylindrical light blue things on the mainboard) are decharged.  MS did't want to use a battery so we have to suffer like this.
