Does your tv support 720p?  That is where mine went bad.  I can get 480p, 480i and 1080i but no 720 of any kind.  When a game tried to go 720 I got a black screen.  Try turning off everything but 480 and see if that fixes it, also check your tv specs to find out what it is supposed to support.

The Samsung has several component inputs on the back and they vary as to what resolutions they accept.  I'd bet money you are having this issue.

One does 480i/480p only (that means no 720p games through here will be displayed)

Another does 480p, 720p, and 1080i(scaled to 720p for display) - most games are at least 480p so that means no 480i only games (un-hexedited Manhunt, Hitman, etc..).  In addition you need to either hex edit your dash or upgrade to the newest Xbox Live dash because the dash is always 480i so you can't see it through this input.  The new Live dash is specifically designed to fix this snafu (upgrade, reboot, while in dash hold both triggers and click both analog sticks).

Obviously S video is 480i only so everything works through there in 480i mode.

You can find out which games support which resolutions here:

hdtvarcade.com/xboxlist.htm

Also ChrisF that is true for the HLN W Samsung DLP TVs.  However the newer W1 models do not have this issue.  They support all resolutions (480i/480p/720p/1080i) on all 3 component inputs.  Unfortunatly they are still being sold as the "W" models in stores, the only way to tell if you have a W1 is to physically look at the back of the set, or check the service menu.

Ahh - interesting.  A friend just bought a 50" from Sears two weeks ago.  Wasn't the new model.  I think the next year's versions are coming out soon - or I heard something to that effect I think.  I'm kind of surprised they production revisions to the older model.  This has plagued quite a few people and I know tons who are thrilled with the new 480p dash (most have unmodded boxes) and Samsungs or front projection units that have the same 480i component issue.

Actually S-Video is about 400 lines, and the source material is usually even lower. 480i, simply means that the image is interlaced (I) rather than Progressive (P).

It's still basically the same resolution from a source such as a DVD or an X-Box, but Progressive provides a much more flicker free image. This is because progressive provides 1 full frame per second rather than 2 halves of an image interlaced per second.

480p and higher can only be provided via a VGA/DVI or Component type connection, all of which provide a much cleaner image and provide strong signal separation for all of the "components" of a video signal, meaning ®ed (G)reen
(B)lue, and the horizontal and Vertical synch signals.

Basically it's low end computer resolution for your TV, which is why playing a console on a TV looks much better via Component (HDTV) connections.

Of course the game and the console and TV have to support the video mode you wish to use. Most games provide 480P since the Xbox can always downgrade a 480p image into an NTCS interlaced signal for a standard SVHS or RCA (composite) TV.

EA seems to be one of the only companys that just doesn't get it, Both of their Bond games provide poor or NO HDTV progressive support. Pathetic really.

Hope this helps some people understand the differences.
