To avoid confusion here... the picture of the AVIP connections represents the top side of the board !

Good call diNgdoNg, thanks I forget to mention that fact.  sad.gif

the thing is, the manual doesn't speak of any switch...  dry.gif

nevermind that, i figured it out  biggrin.gif
the manual has some output modes next to the different instalations so i dug a litle deeper in the manual and came to the conclusion that you have to connect 3 switches for video mode switching.
beerchug.gif

but  now i've come up with another question.
the manual speaks of 75Ohm coaxcable, but as my german isn't the best i would like to know if all connections have to be made with caox or just the syc signals (from the 74HC14 - to the 74HC14?).

wich cables should i use?

All video connections should be made with 75ohm coaxial screened cable. You can buy some good quality minature coax. However as you will be more than aware of, there ain't much room. Since the lengths of cable inside the box are small and of course there is the screening can surrounding the entire box, I found the by taking two lengths of standard low profile hook up cable, stuffing one end of the pair in a vice/clamp and the other in a drill, you can spin up some "spiral cable". Althought not 100% perfect screening it is better than nothing. For short running inside the box I found no ill affects at all. And it fits in tight places.

at my local electronics shop these are the smalles ones i could find (with reasonable quality):

http://velleman.be/c...t.Aspx?id=18908
http://velleman.be/c...t.Aspx?id=18913

i was thinking of going for the white one as it's a full copper core, and the black one is copper plated steel.

would this be appropriate or do i need to look for smaller coax?

The more coax you use - the better image quality you'll get.
But it will work with plain cables too, just like the traces on the board wich aren't shielded in any way.
I think it depends on your soldering skills if you want to go for coax.

soldering is no problem at all, and i want highest quality possible so i guess i'll just go with the white coax then.

6mm coax that's huge. I would not use solid cable at all as one jolt whilst building and bang -  there goes your trace. That coax you linked to looks like TV coax for RF use which is not the same as composite etc video cable although yes it works it's not technically the right stuff.

Mini good quality coaxial cable for video is a bit thin on the ground. I have however used the internal cores of this stuff before. Buy a metre length and of course you get 2.

CPC 2004

Van Damme 75Ohm coaxial cable
Buy a piece of the 2 core version @ £1.90/m

thx for the links and sorry for the late reply.. my isp was acting up again  rolleyes.gif
So now i see the difference between TV and video coaxial cable (i didn't know there was a diff).

my last question is, where do i use the coaxial cable?
do i have to use it for only the Sync signals (so: 74HC14 => VGA port ) or for the color signals to? (and what about the wires going from the encoder to the 74HC14? sure, pin 14 is VCC so that would require a normal cable but).

my soldering skills are great, but my technical knowledge about video/audio stuff isn't that great (as you can see), hence the (stupid) questions.

In my opinion this can only be a marginal effect if you take into consideration that signals on the mainboard are making their way through unprotected traces anyway, so a few more inches can't be such a big deal. huh.gif

you've got a point there, but then again the traces don't overlap eachother (they run parrallell) as wires do. (<= just thinking out load)

so i'll just go with what i can get my hands on.
thx for the info m8.

now i just hope my xbcase arrives soon.  dry.gif
