Advanced Vs High Definition Pack

All that you said is correct. There IS 5.1 output, but no 480P on the Advanced AV Pack. You will need the HD Pack for all 480P and all other HD signals.

How can you tell be looking at the thing which is the HD and which is the AV?

Plus the packages are clearly labeled. Basically you ware looking for component cables vs svideo/composite
