Ok, I dunno about your receiver, but on mine, if I play a DD2.0 source, then it defaults to pro-logic, unless I change it to Stereo.  So it is obvious to me whether or not something is actually 5.1.  All games I have played appear as 5.1.  Sure, not all games use the seperate channels that well, but they are 5.1.

Well my reciever shows which channels it is decoding (eg it shows only the left and right speaker for stereo and for surround it shows all 6 speakers) and for EVERY SINGLE Xbox game I have played on it it shows up as 5.1, so I would say that yes the games are in true surround.

I think that it's a licens agreement that the game companies have to accept to make xbox games.
They must have 5.1 sound. Otherwise MS wont accept the game.

I really hope that on xbox2 the games have to Widescreen support and 1080i support.

just because the xbox is sending a 5.1 DD signal DOES NOT mean every game is 5.1.

My nf7-s motherboard sends constant 5.1 to my A/V reciever - even when playing 2 channel stereo mp3's. They aren't 5.1 though are they wink.gif

I remember playing at least 1 game that doesnt make any use of the center channel (so it would be 4.1), can't remember what it was called though.

I realise that jm_007

I work with Audio (Dolby Digital,DTS) all day long @ work  so I am pretty familiar with what your saying.

Though the Games I did mention support true 5.1 Dolby Digital Audio.

oh yeah of course. It's just that a lot of people don't realise that. I know there is at least one game in my collection. I think i'll have to dig it out.

Speaking of DD. When I play Tiger Woods 2004, there is no sound out of my center channel. I know it is Dolby Digital becasue my brother-in-law has it and the center channle works fine. Mine center works on every other game. Any ideas? Oh, and my receiver is automatically switching to DD, so I know it is getting the signal.

XboxTM video game system from MS will feature the new Dolby Interactive Content Encoder, a breakthrough technology that dynamically encodes multichannel audio into Dolby Digital 5.1.

That means real time encoding.

that doesnt maen its *actually* full 5.1. All that means is that it sends a 5.1 singnal, it doesnt mean it actually makes use of every channel.

1) 5.1 = 6 speakers, not 5.

2) think about it for a second. the xbox can upmix in real-time to 5.1 - thats all gravey. But wait - what if it's sending a 5.1 signal, but not actually sending any information for every speaker - like the center speaker for instance. The "5.1" signal is there, but no sound is actually sent.

Understand it yet?

if a game is TRUE 5.1 - the xbox just does its job and convertes into 5.1 DD. Nice and easy. But if the game isnt true 5.1, then the xbox can still convert, but wouldnt nessaserily use every channel unless told to.

Take my ABIt nf7-s motherboard. That has nvidia soundstorm - just like the xbox. It can upmix to 5.1 in realtime - just like the xbox. But when upmixing say, 2 channel content, it DOESNT use the center channel unless you specifically tell it to.

....Same thing with the xbox, im sure.

I can understand if you mean its not A dolby 5.1 signal sent but still 5.1. Or that specific sounds for each speaker are not there.

But as for every speaker my speakers work flawless. Each speaker has sound. The rear speakers play that like LFE or something where they don't have voice but background. Like every other dolby source.

Every speaker works. Also I have an 5.1 speaker set as well without, without Dolby Digital Decoder in it. It also plays all channels with sound as if it was in my dvd with a decoder in the dvd.

none of that has anything to do with the xbox.

i have a full 6.1 setup and trust me when i say there are a few games that do NOT use every channel for effects, even though the xbox is sending 5.1.
