Preparing Vga Cable
« on: February 07, 2004, 02:35:00 PM »

I just came back from Radio Shack with the following:

15-Position Male HD Solder Type D-Sub Connector   Cat. No. 276-1501
(I bought another one just in case)
XBox S-Video/AV cable

I also have thoroughly read GeRZAND's Tut and Post.  I also have read the "XBox VGA Mini HOWTO" written by Oliver Schwartz.

Now before I go in and start tearing and re-soldering, I have a question.

1.  My XBox was built in Aug 2003. The video chip has changed and is a FOCUS chip.  Does this affect my chances of getting a signal on my monitor?

Thanks

If you are using Xbox Linux, the yes, otherwise, most likely not. Just to check, do you know if your monitor can support Sync-on-Green? If not, then you need to add the LM1881 circuit, otherwise it's an option (maybe if you take it to someone else's house who may/may not have a SoG capable monitor).

According to a list and speaking with someone else, my monitor does support it.  So with that in mind, you say it's a go then, huh?

Also, I thought the only vga-specific bios' known to work (Pixel8s or TatXs) only work on version 1.0's unless you're actually running Linux.  Furthermore, be wary about those pinouts in the tutorials section, or rather, be mindful of which way you are reading the pin outs (either looking at the cable from the xbox side or cable side).

and also, the fact that my box was built in aug 2003, basically leaves me SOL?

Yup.

I thought TATX would work on a v1.1?

So I shouldn't even build the cable, because it won't work.

Do I have any other option on getting video on my Monitor?  (aside from using my ATI All in Wonder card)

You can buy a premade VGA box if you're really hardcore about the VGA issue.

EDIT: I believe TATx's bios was made so that 1.1 users could enable VGA but I don't think anyone is/has been working on a VGA bios in a while.
