Setting Mode Without Hd Pack

This subject has been dealt with many times Captain. You need to put the box into YUV mode by grounding pins 11 and 13. Enable the modes you can support in the M$ dash then ground pins 9 and 13 to get VGA. Job done. Install switches is the easiest way.

that available instead of having to solder up a lead which is something I am
reluctant to do because of my lousy soldering skills . Does anyone even know if the video settings file is the one that would be patched?

Can't be done via software - there is no quick and easy fix for what you want to do.
