720p To 1080i Upconverter
« on: January 29, 2004, 01:30:00 PM »

One thing I would want to know if I were you.

Assuming it is an LCD or DLP set.

Does the TV actually do 1080i native?
If it does not there is in my opinion little point in upconverting because the TV will downconvert back to its native resolution.

If it is CRT it is more likely to show up artifacts caused by the upconversion. Unless you got money?

I have only seen up conversion twice.
Thye first occasion was a sub £1000 unit. I was not impressed.

The second time was at TAG McLaren it was unbelieveable but did cost many thousands to achieve along with a CRT pj that had 9" guns.

This is why you get a TV that supports 720p.

All you have to do is disable 720 p in the dashboard and you will either get the game in 480 p and 1080i.

I didnt know that they had HDTV in Europe or Pal countries yet!
assuming you were using euro currency!

also yes there are set top boxes that will take 720 p and upconvert to 1080i

Are you speaking of over-the-air 720p signals being converted to 1080i, or do you know of a set top box that will accept an external 720p signal (ie from xbox) and convert it.  The set top boxes I have seen only have an antennae input, none with a component input.  Please let me know if you have seen one with the ability to accept and convert the xbox signal as I would like to purchase it.

Thanks!

PS - didn't buy a tv with 720p because I couldn't afford it.  I got the the RCA open box item for $950.

The only 720p capable tv I came across was a Samsung HPN6339 Plasma tv...for $20k dry.gif

Is there any 720p capable that's sub-$10k or close to $10k?  blink.gif

Tons of plasma, lcd, etc.. tv's that support 720p - that is the native resolution for most of them.

Most RPTVs are 1080i native and the ones that support 720p merely upscale the signal internally.  The majority of sets do not do this since the feature is usually handled by an external settop box.  The Xbox is the only application that really runs into a problem.  As far as making an HDTV purchase decision based on the few xbox games that support 720p - my priorities are a bit different.  Once the next generation of consoles come out, it won't be an issue.  Xbox just doesn't have the power to play more than a small minority of titles in 720p and only a few in 1080i.  If you want HDTV gaming, you go Home Theater PC.

As far as purchasing a 720p to 1080i scaler...serious dollars for a few games.

I was looking on Worst Buy's website and several other sites and found a lot of 720p input capable TVs, but all but that Samsung I looked at upconverted to 1080i. Actually, I should probably wait till TVs with 1080p come out and drop in price a little. Found a CRT projector from Barco that supports up to 1080p, but I can't find a price on it, uses a shitload of electricity, and weights more than a "standard" RPTV. There's "lesser" versions of that model, and the most obvious difference is RGB Bandwidth goes lower the lower the model of the series you go, along with electricity used.

Got a model number on that TV? And is it true 720p support or is it upconverting to 1080i?

Zenith C32V37 32 Inch HDTV 480p, 720p and 1080i

I don't even know this TV but I will say that I am absolutely positive it does not display both 720p and 1080i (this is expensive and no CRT based set that I know of does it although there were a few in the past that did - at a much higher price point).  It will upconvert or downconvert one of them - certainly accepting 720p and converting to 1080i.

If I had ~$40k, I'd get a Barco Cine 9 CRT Projector (up to 1080p)...found it for £30k from the only site I could find a price for this unit.  sad.gif

Another bad thing or two is that it weighs 180+ pounds and eats up 800 watts (It's stated Power Consumption (230 VAC +15%/-10%) - 800 Watts, so I'm not sure that it'll be the same for ~120 VAC).

Bro - if you want a CRT projector, visit avsforum.com.  They have a specific forum for CRT projectors and you can get dialed into someone who can hook you up.  Lots of these sell used at absolutely huge discounts with a lot of life left in them.  Also check Ebay.  These are bagains used (still expensive though).  If you have  3-5K you can get into one of these (I hope you have a light controlled environment though).  To be honest - there is no display better than a CRT projector under optimal conditions.

Looking at Zenith's website, it supports 1080i and downconverts to other formats.  It says it will play all of them though, looks like a nice tv though, planning on getting a good tv soon, i'm glad i saw this post.
