Progressive (480p) Dvd Movie/ms Dashboard
« on: January 20, 2004, 10:18:00 AM »

For those who do not wish to modify their xbox, but would like to view dvd movies, and view the ms dashboard, in progressive scan via a transcoder (x2vga, etc.), all that needs to be done is, open up the AVIP plug on the transcoder cable (the end that goes into the xbox), and desolder pin 11 to pin 9.  This is called vga (GOG) mode.  The only problem with this is, it only allows for progressive scan in 480p (720p and 1080i will not be accesable).  A solution to this would be to put a switch in the avip plug than switched between pin 11 being in it's original place, and the other with pin 11 attached to pin 9.

Okay, this answers my initial post.  However, I lack the time and the talent to do this.  Is anyone selling a cable like you describe?

Thanx

It is rather quite simple.  Cutting a hole in the top of the AVIP plug for the switch to go through would be the only difficult part, and then that isn't too hard.

I've got a X2VGA, wonder if you can do this mod on my X2VGA directly? Instead of opening up the AVIP connector, I do it at the other end of the cable, just before it the cable plugs into the PCB? Not sure if the X2VGA already got the wires on these 2 pin already.

Since two different pin number convertion on the web... wonder which is the correct one you refering here?

All the switch is for is to toggle between having pin 9 and 11 attached to eachother and back to the original pins positions.  When switch is in the attached pin 9 and 11 position it is in GOG mode, this forces ony 480p for the dashboard and dvd playback, as well as playing games in only 480p.  In GOG mode, there is no option in the ms dash to enable 480p, 720p, or 1080i; it just forces 480p without any setting up in the ms dash.  When switched back to the original pin settings the other resolutions are available (720p and 1080i) which have to be enabled in the ms dash, but the ms dash and dvd playback will not be in progressive, and they will have to be hex edited to view in 480p.

This method just described has nothing to do with whether or not 480i games will be viewable on a computer monitor.  The only way 480i can be viewed on a computer monitor is if your monitor is capable of syncing low enough to recognize 480i; most monitors cannot.  Now, if some transcoder (X2vga cannot, except in the easyview function which is not ment for playing games) have a feature to make 480i viewable then turning the switch back to normal will allow any such feature to work.

I tried it on the AVIP plug of my X2VGA. I desolder the wire from pin 11 and solder it to pin 9. Is that correct?

The xbox started propelry with the xbox logo, but blanks out when it try to get into the menu.

Am I doing something wrong here?

Hi!

Wonder if you can provide a simple circuit diagram how this works, as I'm a bit confused by the description how the pin should connect.

My understanding is that if I do not care about 720p or 1080i, I just desolder pin 11 and solder it to pin 9?

On my X2VGA, pin 11 is connected by default, while pin 9 has no wired connected.

I assuming looking at the back of the xbox, pin 9 is on the bottom row, pin 9 is 5 pin from the left, while pin 11 is 6 pin from the left?

Hope someone can help me. Thanks.

Yes, desolder pin 11 and attach it to pin 9.

My guess why it is not working for you is, you desoldered and attached the wrong pins, or the newer xbox's don't support the vga (GOG) mode.  I tried it on a ver1.1 and 1.2 and it worked fine.

I'll try and find a good xbox AVIP pin diagram picture for you.

hmm... mine is ver 1.1 too.

I could see the xbox startup animation correctly, but blanks out after that when it try to get into the dash (menu) .

If you can get me a diagram would be really useful.

Thanks.

Ok, check here for a good diagram of the xbox avip plug pin settings.

Also, do you have a pal xbox?  Because i only tested this out on NTSC xbox's.  It should work with pal xbox's, but since i don't have one i cannot say for certain.  And, given the problems of displaying any game in progressive scan in pal, and where it has to bet switched to NTSC to make the games viewable in progressive, might be an issue.

OK I just tried it with my Version 1.0 NtSC XBOX and it did not work, the only difference between my xbox is that I have the latest Xbox Dashboard, so what gives?...does this 480P for everything really exist,?, FOE_HAMMER send me the component cable you use so I can test it on my xbox, I will pay for shipping, casue I really want 480P for everything...I am uisng the Vdigi Adapter and all I get is the flubber animation in 480P then the Xbox Logog, then it goes all black....no image or nothing, just like everyone else reports, so you should check over your cables and the AVIP diagram to see if you told us the right stuff to solder...

I did this on a homemade transcoder a while ago.  The transcoder was made by Ken Gasper; a member on the deceased xboxhaker.net.  I assumed it would work on any transcoder, but i may have been wrong.

And yes, GOG mode does exist, and does just force 480p for everything.  I only tried it on my ver1.0 xbox with the original dash, though.  It may not work on newer xboxs, and newer dashboards.
