I have the same problem, also with matrix.  i've been messing around with it, and as far as my testing goes, if you switch the chip to test mode so its disabled, it powers up fine.  the green light comes on for alignment, so not sure if alignment could be an issue.  I'll try to take out the modchip and just reinstall it tomorrow and see if that fixes it.
