Xbox Audio/ Video Please Help!
« on: January 10, 2004, 09:26:00 AM »

This is well beyond an A/V problem.  There may be damaged components resulting from the power supply accident.  There are a few options I can think of and I'm going to assume right out of the box that you aren't skilled enough in electronic repair to diagnose the problem, obtain replacement parts cheaply (maybe from another wrecked Xbox), and swap out the part on the motherboard.  For well over 99% of the users on this forum including myself that is fairly accurate.

So on to options other than the one stated above:

1) Contact an installer and likely working through the mail ask him to diagnose and repair your Xbox (you want someone well versed in motherboard repair not just some chip installer - I know someone if you need a name).  This is going to cost money since he will have to go through the same steps as I mentioned above.

2) Sell you Xbox on ebay or through the forum here clearly stating the problem and what happened - there is enough of a used part market that you should get something decent for it.  Buy a new Xbox with the cash and chaulk it up to experience. - This is what I would likely end up doing

3) Post in the general technical forum and see if someone can hook you up with some trouble shooting tips - from the sound of the problem though this may be beyond your ability to fix.  The A/V forum isn't really geared to diagnose this type of problem.

Sorry to deliver the bad news but unless you didn't hook everything up right it sounds like the power supply may have done a number on something in there.  If you can get sound and it powers on it likely isn't anything horrible but fixing something of this nature can be a bastard for someone who doesn't know what they are doing.

That's a very relevant piece of information.  To be honest, I'm not sure.

Let me ask you another question just to clarify things.  From your original post I assumed the power supply was connected to the motherboard when it blew....is this true?  Because if the MB and components were not hooked up to the PS when you fried it, it would lend a lot of support to the PS version being the issue.

yes all the MB componets were hooked up. but i dont see why would be getting the sound of the xbox starting up,but no screen.

Burned out video processor?  Damage to areas or components that involve video output.  You should really post this in the general hardware forum.  You aren't getting the type of traffic you need for this issue in A/V.  It's not like a stock video cable issue or some type of mod (I pray to god that by this point you've check the cable in another Xbox as well as the hook up to your television).

It could be something simple but at this point I don't think anyone is going to fault you or call you a double poster.  I don't know anyone that's had your issue.  It's not likely going to be answered by some random xbox guy.  I've had my xbox and others appart tons of times and there is nothing that comes to mind that would cause this issue other than some type of component damage on the Mb from the blow out or possibly some type of incompatibility with the power supply or the molex connector.  Maybe a bad video cable or some type of damage to the video out (sounds reasonable since I'm sure a charge could carry all the way through to the output).

However, make sure you mention that you installed a power supply from a
different version of Xbox and that the PS was hooked up to the MB when it blew.  Maybe a title "Damaged Motherboard/Blown Power Supply" or something along those lines to attract someone who knows what they are doing.

To CHRISF

I had the same problem and couldn't get any help on it.  I did, however, figure out that my s-video works.  I don't have a TV that has s-video so I rigged up an adapter that uses a 10 cent capacitor and thats it.  My advice is find someone that has an s-video tv and try that.  If it works then you in luck.  Oh you need to buy a AV cable that has s-video, can't guarantee it but I currently have a modded xbox where the normal video out does not work but the s-video out does.  Its weird but after figuring it out, I'm satisfied.

I think radio shack sells a s-video to composite adapter, if not I will give you instructions of how to rig one up.
