« on: January 08, 2004, 11:46:00 PM »

Hiya... just wondering how i could basically convert my xbox power outlet from AC to DC already got the TV ready to go with a DC outlet.  (Bought the TV at one of those trucker stops on the Highways lol).  Just wondering, because some converters i've seen are like huge and i've seen people playing xbox in their cars...  Kind of a newb question i know... just can anyone help?

Some people on this forum have reported major video issues (usually due to grounding).

You should do some searching and find which one finally solved the problem.  I think they had to buy a much more expensive inverter than what you normally find at Walmart.

Well you could've searched yourself, but here's the thread.

Looks like about $180.

uziq is right.. i'd expand the range a bit to 40-60$ or so for a decent inverter.

Good luck!

NizZ8 and uziq it's like you didn't even read my posts.    dry.gif

Have you used these with an XBOX in your car?  Like I said, many people have reported (not just on this site) needing to buy more expensive inverters like more like $180.

See this thread:

I've you've had other experiences, I'd love to hear them.  beerchug.gif

Someone recommended to me an Audiovox (i think that was the brand) 400 watt inverter from Circuit City. He also suggested directly wiring it to the battery with a fuse in the middle (of course). Your cigarette lighter can only pull so much power through it (and in some cases, is on the same circuit as the car stereo and god knows what else), so direct from battery is the most likely option to choose. Thanks to my Optima Yellow-Top (Deep Cycle) battery in my '93 Metro, I can use a set of side post terminals and wire the inverter to that while leaving the top posts for the car itself (cleaner installation)...see if you can do the same.

In a friends truck we installed a modded xbox with Dolby Digital, 2 12"s, 3 screens . . . blah blah blah

When you installed the amps you should have had a power distribution block to get the power from the battery.  The main power off the battery should have a fuse withing 18 inches of the battery and then go into the power distribution block where it is fused again and then splits off into various power cables . . . amp #1, amp #2, screen, screen, screen, whatever other stuff you got hooked up.

You should also have a Ground Distribution Block that all your amps and XBOX connect to.  This distribution block is then grounded with a 2-4 Guage wire (depending on how much power you're using) to your car chassis in a spot that has been sanded down to expose the real metal.  That will serve as your primary ground and prevent any ground loops and reduce road noise in the speakers (hopefully).

Also depending on how much cash you can get you can upgrade your electrical system.  The guy we did the install for said money wasn't a problem so we went ahead and upgraded his trucks alternator.  Thats kind of uncalled for but definately invest in an Optima yellow top battery, upgrade the wiring from the battery to your alternator (if you're using enough power to need a deep cycle battery it's gonna need to be charged more efficiently) and use some sort of daisy chain method to improve grounding from the car battery (this will also improve starts, shifting on an Auto transmission and make your headlights a lil brighter smile.gif)

We also used a similar Pure Sine Wave inverter and we never experienced the problems they discussed in the other post.  Definately check out the post Mr. Ed gave a link too.

Ironically Xbox like all computers already operates on DC, the power supply is as far as AC travels.

Yeah, I remember finding on the web a DC to DC convert that would change the voltage to the native XBOX format.  Then you bypass the internal power supply of the XBOX.  I searched for the site again but couldn't find it.  It was a home made project thing, so not just something you could buy off the shelf.
