40 characters is the maximum for a FatX formatted drive or partition.  Renaming is the only option.  Check in the Xbox Media Player forum here.  I posted on a thread in the last day or 2 (search my name if you don't see it) that listed several batch renaming programs.

To be honest - it was this that got me into streaming to begin with as it circumvents long fine name issues and I'm not about to rename my 30 gig MP3 collection and screw up the naming I use on the PC.

thanks this will help me out a lot... I was getting worried for a while because I just finished transferring over 150 cds nicely onto the computer with nice names etc, and I was worried that I was going to get screwed! now I just need a bigger HD on the xbox! 80 gigs isn't enough anymore!
