Major Audio Delay With 5.1 -why?
« Reply #2 on: November 17, 2003, 06:51:00 AM »

I'm new to the whole 5.1 thing.  I finally got it all rigged up.  Samsung 5.1 system, MS advanced AV, optical cable from Best Buy.  But the in-game 5.1 has a major delay on it.  Like almost a second.  The DVDs playing through the built in DVD player have no lag with the 5.1.

Do I have a bum AV pack or a shitty optical cable?

Swapped the optical cable, swapped the AV pack.  Same problem.  I think I bought a bum receiver.

I did that.  I get 5.1 surround sound--a second behind the video.  In GTA, I crash the car, and am out and running away before it makes the noise.

I'm returning the reciever tomorrow.

Before you return it, try your Xbox with another DD receiver; also, try different games and possibly a DVD through the Xbox as well.  This way you can identify the faulty componenet and save yourself some hassle (my guess is the receiver as well).

Tried some other games.  Same problem.  Don't have the DVD kit (and the box is unmodded).  Don't have a spare DD receiver lying around.

check for delay settings on your receiver. I know on my sony i can set the delay by setting how many feet each speaker is away.

Give us the model of ur reciever...

The delay is at it's factory default: 0ms.
The receiver is a Samsung HT-DB120TH.

I think the receiver's optical port might be mis-aligned.  Is that even possible.  As I said, I'm new to the whole 5.1 thing.

Screw it.  This thing's going back.  I found a better deal at Radio Shack.

Thank you all for looking and trying to help me with my problem.  I think what it boiled down to was that my video was going straight to the TV while the audio had to go through the DVD player/receiver.  The receiver didn't have any video inputs, and thus couldn't synch the audio to the video.

I'm sorry if I wasted anyone's time with this thread.

Tokugawa: my video goes directly to my projector. My audio goes:
- through a dolby processor and then
- through an amplifier.

No timing problems whatsoever - the action is perfectly in sync with the audio. I cannot imagine having a timing problem like the one you describe.

I could think of two solutions
1. take your receiver back
2. get (borrow) an external DVD player - and try to hook it up via the optical in. If that results in a delay: you have your answer: the receiver is broken. If it does not you also have your answer: your HD pack (or xbox) is broken...

Good luck,

Miklos

Well I took it back to Best Buy.  I exchanged it for a dedicated receiver (no DVD player) and speakers from Radioshack.  Hooked it up, no problem.  Sounds GREAT!

Everyone should be playing in 5.1.
