How Do I Know.

First you need to find out if your tv is HDTV ready. Just having a component in doesn't make it an HDTV. Also you need to make sure you have the HDTV modes your TV supports enabled in the dash.

I forgot to tell you. I have a Sony Trinitron Wega, with support for all HDTV formats. I am also running component cables. I have also checked all three option in the Xbox Dash to yes. (420p,720i,1080i). Can you answer my question better now?
