1 thing is that you need ro make sure the game supports 5.1

the xbox can encode 5.1 easilly in software / hardware,

on the xbox you get an optical digital output (if you have the advanced cable that is)
or you cold mod the hardware so you get an electrical digital output,

either way, all you get from the xbox is a digital data stream

a 5.1 amplifier contains electronics to read the digital data stream and convert it to 6 analogue sound channels

So, you need a 5.1 decoder

For an easy life, Buy an Xbox advanced AV cable (with 5.1 output)
Buy a TOSLINK optical cable
Buy a dolby digital AV amp!

that'll do you (it works for me!, silent hill is brilliant with surround sound)


not al games do 5.1 sound mind, a lot seem to be shitty PS2 ports - dolby pro-logic2, which,  frankly is crap compared to true 5.1, but better than nothing
