Is there something I need to do to get it to recgonize the xbox dvd controller?  When I start it up it has a red X over the IR interface on the screen.

Just use your MSDash to play dvds with the remote. I dont think any other way works properly with the remote.

If the reason you want dvdx to work with a remote is region free dvds, just patch the original ms dash for region free dvd, and use the remote with ms dash.
