Try using the component video cable hookup if you are not already.

What model?  It probably doesn't support 720p.  A lot of HDTVs don't.  Only 1080i or 480p.

I'm not super familiar with Philip's line, but the only 27inch TV I found of theirs that supports HDTV input is the 27PT8419 which does NOT support 720p.  Like most HDTVs out there, it only supports 1080i and 480p and 480i.

BTW $699 for a 27PT8419 is a great price.  I haven't seen them under $1,000.  Of course, maybe it wasn't a 27PT8419 that you got?

You have to enable different resolutions in the Xbox as well. If you haven't, go to the MS dash to enable 720p, 1080i, etc.

Do those HDTVs include an HDTV tuner or do you still need a set top box to get over the air HDTV signals?

Anyway, remember, only a few games actually support anything above 480p and 16:9.

You can check out which ones do here:

ooooo i thought all xbox games, (especially games like Halo), could be played in HDTV.  So basically there is no point in having the xbox play in HDTV......because only a few games support it and dvd's don't even play in hdtv.  Thanks for the quick reply and link tho!

While not a lot of xbox games support 720p and 1080i, all most all of them do support 480p.  This is a great improvement in picture quality over 480i.  The xbox is the only system where 95% of it's games support atleast 480p.  So, having the xbox hooked up to an HDTV is very profitable.

Alot of people are willing to spend extra $$ to get an external 1080i upscaler, because not many tv's will do that, consider a blessing if the tv is a decent price...

As for the worth of getting HDTV for the XBOX? It's MORE than just a bit better. 480i on a standard def tv vs 480p on the same size HDTV is like night and day....there also are quite alot of games that are in 16x9, but even just getting the 480p is well well worth it! Not to mention that most HDTV's are much easier to recalibrate to compensate for overscan (loss of picture on the edges) compared to your average SDTV.

You really have to try yourself.  Every HDTV model is different.

I've been to the store a few times with my XBOX and component cables to try them out.  Some TVs that upconverted everything to 1080i really had trouble with a source that was not native 1080i (i.e. blurry and flickery).

Many games that support 720p also support 1080i.

The following games support 720p but not 1080i so you won't be able to see the high res. on your TV:
World Series Baseball 2K3
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4
Street Hoops, Soul Calibur II
NBA 2k3

The following games support 1080i and 720p so you can run these in 1080i mode:
Dragon's Lair 3D
Enter the Matrix
Syberia

Again, you should be able to find this info. yourself here:

Am I nervous about investing $4,000+ in an HDTV that doesn't support 720p as that is a more popular mode for games than 1080i?  Yes.  Will I do it?  I haven't decided, I really wanted to get one around Christmas time.

would 720p be a huge difference?

For the few games that support it, yes.

there are hdtvs that take 720p signal and upscale to 1080i ,even though the setting only have 540p & 1080i. my hitachi does this. so look for that option as well.

HITACHI best big screen company in the market... very very nice tv bestbuy does not sell hitachi so if your at best buy if its not mitsubishi don't buy it or you can buy sony and pay extra for absolutly nothing... go to sears and look at hitachi but back to the question.

You can set up your xbox to do 480p 720p and 1080i but most games will default to 480p now look at the games instruction manual I know this sounds silly but some games have you hold a button down say the green one while it boots to enable 720p and it switches and you see wild colors on your tv guess what your tv doesn't accept it.... but read the owners manual... and anytime my hitachi switches signals it gives me what it is on the top corner  so should your philips.

Im sorry but Mitsu HDTV's BLOW ASS!!!

I can't decide if blowing ass is good or bad?  I know sucking ass is bad.

Are you trying to say you really like Mitsubishis, or really hate them?  biggrin.gif  tongue.gif  laugh.gif  jester.gif

Seriously, your post is pretty useless without some explanation as to why you feel that way whichever way it is.  dry.gif
