Actually it´s your source audio that has an extra bit or even more then one in it´s stream. Your destination (Sony MD) detects it, and prevents you from recording.

It´s an old story, in most cases (DAT recorders), you could make an extra piece of hardware that would filter out these extra bits.

In ohter words, in most cases where you can bypass it, it is hacked/modified in the destination (your soný MD).

It should be possible in de Xbox or XBMP XBMC in theory, but you would build some sort of software filter in one of these media players. And you dont want to have that either.
