When I first softmoded my xbox I had evox installed, to me the interface looked cheap and rushed it put me of using it as my day to day dashboard. So how do all the dashboards really differ?


I'm not an expert on dashboards or anything, but for videos and movies you really wanna stick with XBMC.  If you don't like it as your dashboard, you can put it in your applications and then use something else for your dashboard, like UnleashX which doesn't look cheap at all.  I don't know of any other dashboards that play video like XBMC does.
