Dashboard Selector
« on: June 08, 2003, 06:33:00 PM »

Would it be possible to have a dashboard selector option in BIOS that allows you to choose a dash to load, or perhaps a program that goes on the HDD that loads (call it default.xbe or something and make it so that prog is checked for first before the standard dash search) and lets you select a dash? It'd be neat to select one on startup since current non-cromwell BIOSes only check for evoxdash.xbe, nexgen.xbe or xboxdash.xbe, yet with two other dashes (Avalaunch and MXM) that aren't checked without renaming their respective XBE or loading one of those two as an app from another dash.

It'd be easier to just use a dash like evox to launch one of your choices for a dash...

It isn't worth the effort to put it in the kernel when you can use an xbe to do the same job.

I was considering something like this... a simple XBE that remembers the last selected Dash, and loads that, unless the user holds a trigger, for example.

When I get a break, I'll probably knock something out.

Time...that thing developers need more of.
I've been busy working outside the past few days so I've been too tired to bother loading bochs to work on my project, and yet even going at this slow rate, I doubt someone will release it before me.  jester.gif

The last used dash is cached somewhere on X:, Y:, or Z:, right?

No....

There WILL be a dash selector in the next couple of weeks. It will be slick.

Surely people can be patient enough to wait for it, eh?

So, for whomever releases this dash:
What will this "dash selector" be interpreted as/into?
Bios/Kernal or .xbe header?

It will be a tight XBE.

Want specs?

On bootup, the Selector app will look at the controller. If nothing's pressed, it will continue on to boot the 'current dashboard'.

If the right trigger is pressed, a "Quick-Pick" Dash menu will be presented, allowing you to select from up to 8 apps as a dash. Each of these are also assigned to a button, and you can temporarily launch that dash on startup by pressing the assigned button. If the Right Trigger is also held during the button select, that dash will become the 'current' default dash.

Left trigger will be for the apps... 8 apps, if the left trigger is held, you'll get the quick-pick menu for those items, and if a button is also held, you'll get that app.

LASTLY (phew...), holding both triggers will bring up the configuration menu.

Why not just make avalaunch your default, then assign your quicklaunch buttons for other dashes?

jayred and nanoage: that's not the point. The point is to be able to select a dash to boot up that is outside the scope of the bios looking for a dash to boot (looks for evoxdash.xbe first, then neXgen.xbe, and finally xboxdash.xbe). Avalaunch and MXM aren't even looked at unless you change the name of the xbe file to one of those three. This app will load first and check to see what dash you want loaded.

BTW, will you be able to select which 8 are the 8 selectable (in the hypothetical situation that several more dashes are released eventually)? Also, what would the name of the xbe be? Would it conflict with the ability to load the M$ dash (with the modchip disabled) to use XBL?

Well, yes the 8 will be selectable, though I think I'd like to have some intelligence to search for the files used (by XE ID, location and name).

As far as non-mod operation, obviously, you'd only realistically use it in mod mod, so you'd probably best use it with a BIOS that allows alternative naming if you ever plan on turning your mod off. If your mod BIOS boots evoxdash.xbe, you'd name the selector app evoxdash.xbe, after renaming your original evoxdash.xbe something else.

Oh... and I'll make sure password protection is also available, for those that want it.
