Nexgen Dash 0.9c - Bug Report
« on: December 25, 2002, 12:54:00 AM »

OK, just tested it and though I love it, I did find some "hidden" bugs.

I am hoping this will provide some feedback to the guys at GotMod and Xecuter to improve this great Dashboard!

BUGS:

* Launching from EvoX causes problems (even with IGR off) in that the EJECT TRAY option for example reboots the xbox!

* While using an "F" BIOS (4973) and if the "nexgen.xbe" is booted directly as the default dash, it seems to be looking for the "nexgen.xml" configuration file in the (C:) drive not (F:) where it ran/loaded from!

* Problem above does not exist and XML file is read locally (F:) if NexGen Dash is launched from EvoX

* Some apps - XBMP2 - appear without a name ( I've verified the xbe for each of my apps has some text!)

* Adding "E:\Apps" or "F:\Apps" under the search section for APPLICATIONS, causes the applications to be listed TWICE!  I believe the nexGen dash is already indexing the Apps folder by default so you should not add this manually.

* I have over 20 Games on the HD and though the list takes a second or 2 to build up, if you scroll down fast it chokes and even the music stops as it's trying to catch up... (presumably to load the pics?) - Would really need to have this done in the background like EvoX.

COMMENTS:

* OH,  really hate the "blocks used" report for the space taken by the games/apps.  Please use KB/MB, as "blocks" make no sense!!!! I think you guys are copying the M$ dash too much  laugh.gif

* There is a lot of wasted space under the "tab" for each game/application.  The circle with the pic is cool and the name bar OK, but the rest of the "tab" is empty and lots of interesting info could be added there!

* We really need the ability to change the music if so desited, maybe even add a playlist...  rolleyes.gif

I will post more as I test more later...

Again, great release you guys, keep up the amazing work!

also, while watching a DVD. and doing IGR trick, it goes back to dash, but. it loads the default dash

like i had mine all green/nosnoow/added game links.

it goes to the winter blue look, with snow, no game added links, etc.

(im using DVDx2.0)

This doesnt happen if i use games/Mediaplayer/ or are just in the dvdx program.. only while watching a DVD

man im a good bug hunter ehehe

(I think evox had same sorta problem for me also...)

Well i decided to add all the bugs up. here they are (and some suggestions)

BUGS:

* Launching from EvoX causes problems (even with IGR off) in that the EJECT TRAY option for example reboots the xbox!

* While using an "F" BIOS (4973) and if the "nexgen.xbe" is booted directly as the default dash, it seems to be looking for the "nexgen.xml" configuration file in the (C drive not (F where it ran/loaded from!

* Problem above does not exist and XML file is read locally (F if NexGen Dash is launched from EvoX

* if you connect to the FTP with the wrong USER/PASS neXgen crashes

* if you Load up Nexgen, Go to Msdashboard (w/ link), Then do IRG (to go back to nexgen), then do Eject Tray, The xbox reboots.

* It would be good to have the option of choosing between the 12 hour AM/PM system and the 24 hour system.

* while watching a DVD (using dvdx atleast). then do IGR, it loads the default dash. (like the starnderd blue dash.. with no edits from what i made like no snow/game links/ etc.)

* If you write long names for the items you include in the main menu, the names will get out of the dialogue boxes... try for example writting "Final Burn Alpha X".

*Suggestions*

* Fix all the bugs

* Make DVDx2.0 Intergrated

* add all the features as the MS dash. like Clock/Lang/Audio/Video/Parental Control/Auto Off.

* Record a CD/DVD music to HD

* Under sytem INFO, show what Bios you have

* Change and disable music (not just change music, but able to disable)

* Change the Volumes on Music and menus.

1. i cant go into msdashboard from nexgen it loads nexgen.xbe over and over again! i have  dashboard as xboxdash.xbe coz im using new xecutor bios.

2. under storage none of the items are sorted alphabetically they are in no order same goes with others

3. i think you should be able to add your own links like evox when i tried adding links sorted alphabetically they appeared on the main screen! you should have a menu option like evox or allow users to add links in the storage area

4. when scrolling nexgen take time to catch up

5. they are no options to view ip settings and dns settings?

6. many more...

i think this was released way before its time still lots to do to it! i think ppl should have been patient and not groaned and wanted it straight away!

It is clear that NexGen is still and will probably be a beta for a while now.

To be honest I wish they had not released this version so early, Christmas or no Christmas because all it's doing is agravating people who were told it will be ready.  It was hyped up too much by the great guys at Xecuter and it really fails to make the mark.

I can only hope that the developers read all these bug posts and act on them.

I will not be integrating the NexGen Dashboard in my SlaYer's Auto-Installer toolkit (see evoX forum) until all these bugs are fixed.

It's a demo.. DEMO.. Not final..

There are SO many features being worked on for this dash that it will take quite some time to develop.. Problem being that users are impatient.. nexgen announced the dash, and since that day has been bombarded with "can I beta test?",  "what have you got done so far?", "it probably doesn't even exist, that's why we never see it", etc etc etc etc... So they're kind enough to release something, to give people an idea of what's gonna be, and you have the nerve to comment as you do? Pretty wrong dude, pretty wrong.

As for it taking long, and people being told it would be ready... There has never, ever been a date mentioned for final release.. The only date ever publically mentioned about release was that there would be an xmas release that would be a great deal more functional than the 3dmodel demo released some time ago..

And finally as for the dev's reading up on posts of bugs, and making every effort to eliminate all bugs.. Isn't that a given? You think they wanna release less-than-perfect software? Not a Chance. This is why the release is being referred to as a demo, or loosely as a beta (alpha probably would be the most accurate term to use).. It's not final, it has bugs, and they will be fixed in time.

See above note on the release being a DEMO.. Why would you even consider putting a demo on a newb installer disc? Currently the dash is in a state that it really should only be installed and used by those that wouldn't need a newb installer disc such as yours..

Whenever I ftp a bunch of files in Flash FXP, after a few files it disconnects and says out of memory and it wont accept anymore files until I reboot. It does this uploading and downloading.

1wolf1
is correct when he says that there was a lot of hype and expectations for the release
of the Awesome looking neXgen Dashboard.
He is also correct when he basically states that the dashbaord is not ready for buisiness.
He makes a good decision not to include it with his next "packaged" release.

WiKKid
is correct when he says that 1wolf1's SlaYer pack is meant for newb's and the lazy.
Anyone with a little knowledge could make their own "custom" PrepDisk using the EvoXHDprep package.
Save some bandwidth too boot.

Over all there needs to be some care taken by groups when releasing these softW@res.
Users have to be told in litteral terms what to expect. Never @ss'u'me.
The term "Alpha" release means something and generaly most computer folk understand what that means.
The same with Beta and RC1 and so on just like WiKKid mentions.

I can personally say that I was disappointed as well but not becuase it Sucks
but becuase  neXgen is Awesome... as been stated "So much Potential"

I was disappointed that it was not "ready" to replace my EvoX dash, thats all... Damn the Hype.

At least the bug reports are rolling in and the Executer Group can focus on fixing bugs early on
from possibly 1000's of users.

I am really sorry WiKKiD, but I could swear that everywhere I read about the nexGen Dash, I saw references to a "Christams Release" and not a "Christmas DEMO"

Even the news section of xbox-scene lists this as "neXgen v0.9c released!"  I do not see anywhere the words "Preview" or "DEMO" All it says is beta, just like everyone else's stuff!

All homebrew software on the scene is a "beta" but I must tell you that the first "beta" of EvoX worked a lot better and it was advertised as a "BETA" and not as a release, and so have every subsequent releases after it!

Please do not get me wrong, but there was a DEMO, it was the interface preview that was released a while back and this version was suposed to be a "working" release.  Asside from about 20% functionality I do not consider this a release!

Anyone else agree or dissagree with me on all this?

Oh, and WiKKiD, why are you so "stressed" by my comments, are you part of the NexGen team or a close friend or something?   biggrin.gif   Asside from commenting that it is a good looking dash with lots of bugs, no one else seems "hurt" by my statements and everyone else's concearns.

And if you'd bother to read the first post I created, and to which you are actually replying, you'll see that I am simply trying to help identify all the bugs in order to help the GotMod team make this product better.  Developers are not always aware of all the bugs, ever wonder about that?

Can't we all just get along?   beerchug.gif
