60mm Exhaust Fan Attachment Idea
« on: January 17, 2003, 04:01:00 PM »

Hello,
Since I'm replacing the 70mm exhaust fan with a 60mm one, it will be smaller therefore I cant use the existing clips or even use screws because the fan would be too small.  Hows this idea?

Applying the hot glue gun around the edges of the fan and then attaching it to the xbox.  Also, using duct tape to cover the extra holes and putting it around the fan so that its better sealed.

Will that work?

Also, does anyone know the specs of the orignal fan?  The one that I bought has an airflow of 40cfm.  Is that more than the stock fan?

This should work. And here's the specs on the original fan from another post.

" My Xbox has an NMB fan model number: 2810KL-04W-B50.

A google search pulled up that it is 33.5dB, uses 2.16 watts, 180mA, 3800rpm, and moves 52.8m3/hr (I think that's near 30CFM).

The GPU fan is a AD0412MX-G70. 19dB 5.7CFM."

Unless you are dead set on one of these 'stealth mods' that you don't notice at first glance, why don't you use your extra fan and make an intake/exhaust system? I think you could really cool things off in there that way. If you are keeping the black box, I think the fan in place of the green jewel is a smart one.

That's a good bit of improvement in cooling power; it would definately extend the life of all of your Xbox components.

Is there space for a 60mm -> 80mm fan converter?

Because a 80mm with the same CFM as a 60mm is more silent...

I don't see the attraction in putting a smaller fan in the xbox.  To get the same air flow, a 60mm fan is going to have to turn faster, and create more noise.
A more worthwhile mod would be to for an 80mm fan in there.  to get the same cooling as the 70 the fan would turn slower, and result in less noise.

I just installed that 60mm 40cfm fan.  Works great.  Xbox seems a lot cooler.  I have to admit the xbox is significantly louder than before.  But once you turn on the TV and start playing games it fades away.

You might be able to fit a 80mm fan but you might have to do a lot of hacking and cutting w/ a dremel.

i absolutely see no point in all this ...

the GPU fan does make a lot of noise so replacing that one might be a good decission. ( don't forget noise-makers are usually better coolers then silent fans ). But why change the CPU fan ... the original 70mm Fan is a great Fan. Remove the 70mm from your xbox, hook the new 60mm and 70mm to a powersource ( open pc or something ) and just hold your hand near the fans.

The original CPU fan is not a crappy cheap fan like some people let you believe ...

moneyshotz -> your xbox seems a lot cooler ... how do you tell ?
woxiz -> 80mm fan ? then dremel your hd tray, it will fit

It's going to increase the life of your Xbox by more than 2 days and I care.

You also have to keep in mind that the Xbox was not designed to run a 7200rpm hard drive continuously.

woxiz, you would not need to convert down to 60mm.  Just put a 80mm fan in there.  But in order to do this, you have to cut the corners off the fan and cut away part of the hard drive tray.
