Dedicated Server Mystery

I was at a LAN party last night and could only be the dedicated server whilst running the tHC dash. When I ran MXM I could be both a player and server. Anyone know why this is???

The game was Counter Strike, there were 10 boxes.

something to do with networing maybe?
